Reflection - Oct. 9 - Argumentative/Persuasive Essay - Sec. 11

Visit URL: http://mnrivera1.com/Four_Major_Essays.pdf In your own words, discuss what an argumentative essay is. View the topics listed. Discuss which argumentative topic you would select and why. Please note that this will also be reviewed for Test #4. Further reflect on today’s overall activities.

  1. Argumentative essays involve researching and collecting information on a specific topic. It involves a lot of research and may sometimes be confused with expository essays. A topic that I would choose would be all animal experimentation should be outlawed as advances in technology have made animal testing unnecessary because it is interesting. Today we did a survey and it it was cool.

    1. I'm glad the survey was short and straight to the point. I like how we had to look up what rigorous meant before starting on it! :)
I like your topic, by the way.

    2. Argumentative essays seem tedious in the sense that you have to go into detail about what you are talking about. The survey was really short and very easy to understand.

    3. Research is definitely needed for this type of essay. With that type of topic, your essay should be quite interesting!

    4. They survey was alright but it was not interesting for me only because I got a little confused by the first page. With an argumentative essay you will definitely have to have supportive facts about your specific topic so good luck because we probably will all need it once we start on this essay.

    5. The topic you chose sounds super interesting. You should read it when it's time to present :)

    6. That would be an interesting topic. I can't wait to hear your topic sentence.

  2. I started the morning not knowing where the heck our class was, but thanks to technology, I was able to contact one of my fellow classmates to find out where we were located. Unlike the other days, we were located in the computer lab. A new environment in pretty refreshing. In the beginning of class, we worked on a survey from a student at the University of Phoenix who is working on her Doctorate’s degree which is pretty cool. We will now refer to our readings on argumentative essays and focus on it for our upcoming test.

    1. I was lost also, but thankfully you were there so I knew were to go. I thought the survey was also pretty interesting.

    2. Don't worry, me too and I'm glad we were a group a lost people. Better than going doing as one. Thanks for calling one of our fellow classmates. If you hadn't we still would have been homeless students!

    3. At first i thought class was cancelled because i saw everyone walking away from the computer room but i found out that we just had a change in classroom. I like having class in the computer lab.

    4. I thought class was cancelled too because no one was there when I got to the English building, I also checked the computer lab there and there was a different class lol! But I'm glad I found the class.

    5. The survey would probably be the only thing I'll remember from today and transferring classes. Also what we learned today is kind of getting me confused because we are blogging about an argumentative essay but we are reading about a narrative essay.

    6. I love your positivity on us being somewhere else!

  3. An argumentative essay is an essay based on topic you are not only passionate about, but also having the ability and skill to gather evidence and back up what is said. The topics chosen are usually controversial meaning there are two sides to the story, so its up to the writer to choose one side and justify why that is their opinion and why it is correct.
I honestly wish we had more topics to choose so I can take a stand on a topic I'm truly passionate about. But if I had to choose.. I'm debating between
"We should outlaw genetically modified foods until further research can be done to see if these foods affect the environment or us" OR "Fathers should be allowed the same treatment as mothers in family court decisions. Too many times the mother is favored because of the "nurturing" stereotype."
    We shall see! :)
Today's activity included a short survey, reading about descriptive narration in the book, and posting to blog spot. I liked today's reading because since the class has already written a descriptive essay... it should be easier to use the aspects of a descriptive essay we've learned already when writing a narrative essay.

    1. It was tough for me to choose a topic of the list that was given. You seem very hyped to write an argumentative essay. You will do good on this essay :)

    2. Your choice of topics are very interesting! You should ask our professor if you could do one of them, because like we said before, "Writing about experience or something we know makes it much easier." Good luck!

    3. You seem to be on the right path to writing your essay. The essay that relates to you more or captures your attention should be the one you write about. If not, just do a free write one both and then work from there. Good luck :D

    4. I really enjoy hearing your perspective on things! Definitely helps me as a writer.

  4. In the beginning of class, we found out that our class was moved to the computer center. Once we got into class, a survey was passed out for a study research an English professor created. It was simple, but I wasn’t really in the mood to take a survey at the time. We still have more to do during this class time and I hope we are able to finish a tad bit early so I would be able to finish my art work.

    1. Don't worry, you'll finish it on time. The survey was a bit annoying for me as well. I'm too tired to answer questions lol!

    2. Yeah what david said! Having that kind of determination to finish it will lead to a great finished product. I'm an artist myself and the pressure to finish was my best friend.

    3. I'm glad the survey was short because I don't like filling out surveys. Today's class was pretty easy.

    4. I am out of focus today, as well. I hope we do finish early because I have an exam in my next class. I also don't like filling out surveys, so I was really lazy to fill it out.

    5. Although the survey was simple, I also was not in the mood to do it, but we got to support one another :) Good luck on finishing your other assignment!

    6. Im not a big fan of surveys. #tired lol

    7. Yeah the beginning of class was kind of off because first of all we transferred from another computer place. If I had not seen Dr. Rivera I would have been either late or lost. All in all, Class today was different.

    8. Your stippling looked pretty good from my view! Being transferred to another class throw off practically the whole class. Hopefully next time, we'll all do better.

  5. An argumentative essay requires the student to investigate their topic. You need to gather, collect, and interpret data; you can go around and ask for other people’s opinion about your topic; for my argumentative essay I think I will write about home schooling. Home schooling will be an interesting topic to research about and I want to know how people feel about it, whether they are against it or for it. In the beginning of class we took a survey regarding online courses and we went over narrative essays.

  7. An argumentative essay is an essay that focuses on evidence of which you evaluate every reasoning with clear and concise fact. I would really like my topic to probably be the discussion on same-sex marriages being legalized in all states including Guam. I feel that topics that are important to us or if we discuss the realness of the logic in which what we believe is right, I know we are going to have a lot of good essays. As for the class survey, I just want to say I rather have traditional classes than an online class. Being in a new place feels fresh.

    1. I think that's a great topic! A same sex couple came into my work yesterday to buy their dresses for their wedding but they have to fly out to Hawaii for it to happen.. It was really nice to see how happy they were together though =)

  9. To me, an argumentative essay is about you saying what you believe is right or you going against a topic or statement and proving it. You basically argue about a topic or try to go against it. In the process, you have to do your research, maybe even provide statistics and facts about your topic to prove your point. There was quite a few topics that caught my interests so I am still unsure of what topic I will pick. The topics about birth control, cloning, stem-cell research and using death row inmates rather than animals for testing caught my attention. We did a survey at the beginning of the class but I wasn't in the mood to take it. However, I did because it is to help other students as well. Now we are reading about a narrative essay and how to structure it.

    1. I agree there were a lot of topics to choose from that made it somewhat hard to choose one. I also did not feel like taking the survey due to laziness.

    2. You should write about cloning. That would be interesting to hear about if you do end up reading your essay on test day. But you should start writing soon because I usually get bored of topics and switch from one essay to another.

    3. I also was thinking about the cloning topic!

  10. An argumentative essay is writing about a topic with supportive facts and also opinions. There is researching involved and you really have to make sure you are accurate. In class today we did an essay and to be honest I got a little confused on how they ask the questions. I also got confused on how we changed classrooms. Overall, I had a great time in class like I always do especially with the classmates I have, who would not like class.

  11. An argumentative essay is an essay the requires students to investigate on a certain topic. I'm very weak at writing an argumentative essay, so hopefully something comes up to me and it'll be good. It's going to be very challenging when it's time to start working on this. And I liked to today's activities. This will be a huge help in writing my narrative essay so I will definitely be referring to this section when its time to work on the essay. Even though I had a hard time looking for the class this morning, I'm glad I caught up with the class. =)

  12. An argumentative essay is an essay in which we can argument upon a topic and get others in agreeing with you. When writing these essays it takes a clear mind and excessive research to be able to grasp your peers. In addition, when you engage into an argument you always want to come out with the win (except when arguing with your girlfriend). If I were to choose a topic to write about it would be about “restricting phone use (texting and calling) while driving”. So many people get into accidents due to this, so I believe it would be fairly easy to write about. Overall, today’s class turned out to be good-as always.

    1. I agree, it does take a clear mind to write an argumentative essay. You have to create a debatable argument which is fun, sometimes.

    2. I'll be looking forward to reading your essay because I'm guilty of texting and driving.. :(

    3. I liked how you said that about your girlfriend! Cellphone use while driving is definitely not a good thing. It would be nice to hear someone emphasize on that, especially for those who are still unaware of the consequences and outcomes that may happen while they are too busy on their phones.

    4. That is an excellent topic to write about because it has affected the lives of many. I think you will find a myriad of evidence to support your topic. I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say about this topic in your essay.

  13. In today’s class we discussed writing an argumentative essay. When writing this essay we need to gather information and build up a backing to support your main topic or view. When writing the essay you need to have significant evidence so that you could persuade the reader to agree with your view. With the combination of a good argument and strong evidence to back up your views and a strong conclusion will make a great essay.

  14. An argumentative essay is an essay where you investigate and gather information. The argumentative topic I would select is “Home schooling provides an exceptional education under controlled circumstances. Nevertheless, I would advocate that every American child should receive at least two years of public schooling before graduating from high school.” I chose this topic because I can clearly talk about the reasons as to why home schooled students should go to public school for two years. For example: It can hurt a home schooled student with group work, social skills, and communication.
Today we started class with a survey, which I couldn’t take because I’m only 17, and then we continued on with blogging. After we finished with the survey and blogging we continued with our lesson in our English book

  15. An argumentative essay is different from both of the essays we’ve worked on. This next essay requires actual research. This essay requires an opinion and good reasoning behind it. Well, as for me, this is what I think it is. The topic, “We should use death row inmates as subjects for medical testing rather than animals.” This statement is absolutely without a doubt ridiculous.
Today we did our usual activity. We read from the book and reflected. I love how Dr. Rivera tends to question us during the lecture, it keeps me on my feet and keeps me questioning everything. I did the survey however, I always wonder why they even ask for opinions. I never think they actually read those. I just think it’s somewhat of a waste of paper that could be recycled. But, if they do decide to read it and use the statistics then, okay. I enjoy being in the other computer lab, simply because it feels as if we’re more “intimate.” Hahaha, not in that way- of course. In this class, I just feel somewhat like a zombie.

    1. Oh my gosh, your topic! That is one of the topics I am looking into writing about. However, I am iffy about it because I don't want to talk about neither. Although it is for a good cause, I don't like the idea of the word testing. I find this topic to be controversial. Responding to your blog made me realize that this topic in not for me. You should write about it though! It would be nice to hear someone talk about this topic. Good luck!

    2. I thought that topic was eye-catching because it deals with an idea that most people are uncomfortable to talk about or is considered a taboo.

I had that same point of view about surveys, as well, but in the paper written by the research conductor, said the information will have a purpose. So that means that our opinions are not ignored and the tree that died to make that paper didn't die for nothing.

  16. Today, we started off class with a survey. Then, we read and discussed descriptive narration. An argumentative essay requires the writer to investigate a topic. It establishes the position of the writer on that topic while providing evidence to support it. The topic that I would select involves the outlaw of genetically modified foods until further research. I take great interest in health and wellness, and nutrition plays a huge role in that. Hopefully, with further research, I will develop greater knowledge in that field.

  17. An argumentative essay is an essay that you persuade the reader to agree with your position on a topic. You might need to make a strong thesis statement and use some researches such as facts, surveys, and data to support your essay. I am still in deciding which topic I would like to work on. But somehow, I seem like I am not familiar with those topics, my brain is so empty now. Hopefully I can figure out that as soon as possible before the week of due date.

  18. Reading about argumentative essays brought me back to my junior year in high school when my English class had to do a research essay on any topic of our choice. Argumentative essays and research essays may be two different essays, but they both deal with a huge amount of research and collecting data on a specific topic. Being able to have that experience makes me feel kind of ready and excited to write my argumentative essay.
Today, I was late to class because I locked my key in my car. Luckily, my uncle is a locksmith. On top of that, I was unaware that our class was being held in another room. Realizing that I was late for class, my fellow classmate, Zya, was kind enough to let me know where. Upon my arrival, I was handed a survey and the class was reading about descriptive narration. Sadly, this class time went by so quickly that I had no time to enjoy it. But, good luck to everyone on their essays! I know I will start early on mine.

  19. An argumentative essay is an essay where you will argue why your idea is the correct idea, backing up your opinion with facts and evidence. You will need to research on your subject. You could do this by investigating and getting first hand experience on the subject. Sometimes you have to experiment if your subject requires you too or you need better evidence to support your claims.

Today we did a survey and I liked it. I loved how it dealt with online classes, which is something I hate very much. My Geography class is a hybrid class so I dropped it because I will not take a hybrid class.

  20. An argumentative essay is when the writer is trying to convince the reader the writer’s position in writing the essay. The writer elaborates an idea to persuade the reader of a certain topic by gathering evidence to support it. If I were to select one of the topics under argumentative essay selection, I would pick “Drivers in the state of Minnesota who are over 70 years old must pass an annual test for eyesight and physical ability before they can renew their driver's license.” This is an argumentative topic because there is a truth to it.
For today’s class, we were given a survey. Before class started, we needed to fill out that survey. Afterwards, we read the selection in the book about narrative essay. Now that we went over the reading, I think I have a better understanding of writing a narrative essay.

  21. Argumentative essays in my opinion are the most strenuous ones to write. They require extensive research on the topic in order to create and prove your argument. The tricky part of writing argumentative essays is making sure you cite your sources correctly and give credit to those you borrowed work from to support your own. Reading the list of topics we can write on, the topic of driving and texting interested me the most. I have written on a similar topic before so I can use my previous work as a source and help for my paper.
