Reflection - Nov. 6 - Test #3 - Sec. 11

Discuss your thoughts on taking Test #3. Were you prepared for it? If so, what strategies did you use as part of your preparation? If you were not prepared for it, what will you do next time to ensure that you do well on the test? In addition, discuss your thoughts of today's activities.

  1. I was not as prepared for test 3 than the previous tests. Compared to the previous tests, I thought this test was much more difficult because we actually had to research and the topics that were given didn't really suit my interests. For the next test, I will better prepare myself and avoid procrastinating. Today, everyone presented their essay topics and it they all had interesting ideas.Overall. today was a chill day.

    4. Yeah, I agree with you. I had a fairly rough time doing my essay. Some topics were too boring and some I just fine any interest in.

    7. I was prepared for this Test as well, but I too thought the topics were really hard to write about.

    8. Our old ways of procrastinating continues to haunt us in college. It is very difficult to break out of this addicting habits.

  2. Today's class we were just giving an overview of our essay. I still find it interesting to hear what people have to say about their topic. I was prepared for this essay because I had an idea of how alcohol would effect school life and i had the research to backup my essay.

  3. In taking test #3, i used a few of strategies in forming my essay. One thing I learned about myself is that I really do like to research things online and i feel that researching does help. What I do need help on was learning how to cite and interpret it on my essay, mainly because our next essay is focused on research.

    1. I concur, i enjoy researching more about my topic because i get to read about other people's findings and relate it to my thoughts.

    2. I dislike researching, but you are right it does help further our knowledge of topics.I also need to learn how to properly site.

    3. Researching does help a lot, and I also need improvement on citing.

    5. I am really scared for the next essay because I am not one who likes researched essays. I hope one day I can feel the motivation you have for the researched papers.

    6. I agree with learning and interpreting citations. I was having a hard time with that as well. Good luck on your essay!

    7. The research part was the most difficult for me because I didn't know which article related to my topic more. I'm nervous about our next test..

    9. I had a hard time as well with interpreting citations, that's why I just quoted them. The research was very interesting to do.

  4. I was not prepared for test #3. I kind of had a rough time mostly because it was researched based and not all the sources I found and read were reliable and accurate. Next time I will be more prepared and do my research ahead of time. Today's activity was alright. All we did was share our essay with out classmates and then blogged.

    1. The sources i used all seemed reliable and had studies to prove their results. If i find resources that aren't reliable i try to use them to lead me to a more reliable source.

    2. Agreed, test 3 was much more difficult than the previous tests. Hopefully, you and I will be better prepared for the test.

      Delete
    3. It does depend on what topic you choose because some are accurate and some are not. Hopefully, you have more time to prepare for test #4. Good luck :D

      Delete
    4. I agree, with you about finding accurate information. For me, it was hard to even find information. I had to keep clicking different websites, but luckily I came across a few. We should definitely get started on our next essay!

      Delete
    5. I agree finding out whether each source was valid was challenging to me.

      Delete
    6. I feel for you, because most of the sources that popped up were unreliable. My suggestion is to choose a topic that is greatly talked about. More discussions equals more research and experiments.

      Delete
  5. I used each of the strategies that were given to help us write our paper, which helped me-- like always. This test was very challenging to me because I procrastinated. I tend to pick topics that are sentimental to me and I also had a hard time writing it because of that. I was trying not to write how I speak. I often found myself having to change words around. I was not as mentally prepared for this as I thought I was. The research made me see things at a different perspective and was very helpful. I can't say I won't procrastinate ever again because I'd be lying however, I will try my best not to procrastinate as much on this next essay.

    1. The list of strategies do really help, but unfortunately I also had a difficult time writing this because the topics didn't suit my interests.

    2. I know its hard to interpret things on paper, especially when you have to sound really informative. It was good though.

      Delete
    3. The strategies did help out a lot, along with researching. It's hard not to procrastinate because its contagious.

      Delete
    4. Same here, I say I'm going to procrastinate but it always happens. I'm going to put more effort into our last essay.

      Delete
    5. Yeah, the stages really helped. Every since I started using the stages, it made writing my essays a lot easier.

    6. Picking a topic that has sentimental value makes it difficult to create an essay filled with facts. Maybe you can pick something that interests you, but at the same time not hold such sentiment. =)

  6. Today was Test #3. I quite enjoy doing our tests this way. Doing the research was a good experience and it definitely helped expand my essay. Its great practice and it forces us to actually do it because it is a test. Just like all the other test days, I really enjoy listening to everyones essays!

  7. Test #3 is done, one more to go. Today is just about the same as our other test days, but with a different type of essay and many different topics. Research and no procrastination (I'm a major procrastinator) aided me to finish this essay. Overall, I'm thankful that the test is over with, and class went smoothly.

  8. Today was our third test. This essay was dealt with research for the topic you chose. I enjoyed this essay because the research helped expand our essay. You didn’t have to just think of the words on your own unlike the previous tests. This essay was pretty easy because it was a little personal but I still had to research facts to make my statements accurate. It seems that most people stuck to only a few topics. Majority of the topics were strict parenting, the use of makeup, alcohol, and smoking. I like today’s class because it seemed fast paced and easy going.

  9. I found that writing test #3 was very difficult for me. I kept switching topics and I just didn't know what to write about. I could say that I'm very weak when it comes to writing an expository essay :( I'm kind of nervous for our last essay cause I don't have any experience with writing argumentative essays. I'm glad everything is over though and we're finished with the test. I love class periods like these :)

    1. Good luck on your last test! Maybe we should start on it now. I'm totally freaking out about it too.

    2. I understand how difficult it is to switch from topic to topic. You should write about the one that interested you more. Expository essays are not all fun but sometimes when you start your research, you get into it and find it fun to research.

      Delete
    3. I kept switching topics too, so don't feel bad! By researching every topic I leaned towards, I connected with one's topic's statistics more than the others, so that's how I decided. :) AND DONT BE NERVOUS, YOU GOT THIS! :D

    4. I'm also nervous about our last essay, I'm not very argumentative when it comes to my writing.

  10. I was actually very prepared for test 3. I did not start as early as I thought I would, but I still put in the effort to finish on time, and I did. Last week when we were given time to finish our first few stages, I took the advantage to really get things started. That gave me more time for peer review, and luckily, I had more than three people to peer review my paper. Their thoughts improved my paper, and I am truly grateful for that. I learned a lot from my topic and I am happy with my finished product. As for today’s activities, I was really intrigued by the topics everyone chose for their essays. They were all very informative.

    1. Me too, I actually looked up my topic on that day Dr. Rivera gave us time to do it. If she did not, I don't think I would've started it early.

    2. I agree about test 3. I felt prepared and didn't have to rush unlike the other essays. I love how you made more people peer review your essay because that does help you write a better paper.

  11. Although I just finished my essay last night, I was not stressing about it. I found it easier than the other essays because I had my ideas about the topic and just searched it up. However, it was quite hard to find information about why teen's skip school because most did research on the consequences of skipping school. Nevertheless, I stuck to my first topic because I too have skipped school for wrong reasons.

    1. I agree, I did not stress about my essay. It was the easiest test I took for this class. It was actually fun and I guess I learned that I like research better than I do about writing about myself.

    2. I did not stress out about this essay too. Thankfully Dr. Rivera gave us time in class to work on it in class cause it definitely helped me get my essay together in time.

    3. It's great how you used a personal experience to inspire you. Having that type of perspective makes the essay a lot more believable, honest, and sincere. Don't worry about previous mistakes, as a student, you're awesome!

  12. I was prepared in terms of the writing portion, but printing it and citing was an obstacle for me. I don't have a printer at home and printing it before class is a hassle because I have a class right before this and for some odd reason the computer printers have been slacking. But I'm glad I printed it and turned it in on time! In terms with citing, I was worried about doing it correctly. I'm somewhat familiar with it, but it's still something I'm not completely comfortable doing because it hasn't been required of me in the past few years.

I was hoping to hear more of everyone's essay beyond the thesis sentence because it's so much fun listening :D I noticed the popular topics of the day were music and alcohol. I think they're great topics because they affect someone one way or another! Today was great, a little bit hectic, but a relief to accomplish test #3. On to our last essay, YOOHOO!

  13. I thought I was prepared for test #3. When I first heard about the assignment I started brainstorming and thinking of ways society relates to music that I already knew. The 3 examples that I used for my expository essays were topics that I already knew about, I just needed to find sources to back up what I knew about the 60’s and Bob Marley. I will start preparing for the next test.

    1. I really liked your topic Kevin! It's so true how the evolution of music played a HUGE part on the mood of society. Like when you mentioned jazz in the past and how it evolved into bob marley kind of music during another era. It was really fascinating, good job. :D

    2. Just like Ixora, I enjoyed your topic as well. I liked the way you explained it.

    4. I should have began earlier on this assignment. I guess old habits do follow you unless you can break it.

  14. I did not like test three because i could not input my views and it is more factual. but it gives us a chance to input the information we get. I was not prepared but i will prepare in advance from now on.

    1. I think it really depends on your topic. I get what you are saying though! It was quite hard for me to not input my own opinions about my topic. Yes, we should definitely start our next essay soon, because the due date is just around the corner.

    2. Really? I would have to disagree. I really enjoyed this one. The information was literally online for you to take and use for facts. Just as long as you cited though.

      Delete
    3. Not being able to write your opinion definitely makes it difficult to write an essay.

      Delete
    4. I believe you will prepare enough in advance on the rest of the test.

  15. I liked test number 3 with the expository essay. It was easier than the last two tests only because the information was provided for you on the internet. You didn’t have to think so hard to write out your essay. It was also easier to start the essay. I usually have a hard time doing so. I can say that I was prepared for this test only because I didn’t procrastinate on this. I started in class that one day.
In class, we presented our tests with our topic, our thesis statement, and what we learned about the essay. After we presented, we posted our blogs and continued on with our brain stretchers. We had the choice to do the brain stretcher on the blog or to present in class

    1. I agree, starting in class that one day was really helpful. Also, like you said, having the information provided to you.. it made it a lot easier to write down what you found out, rather than creating something from the top of your head. (:

  16. Test #3 was very interesting to do, but I’m not going to lie, it was pretty difficult. The research conducted to support points makes an effective expository essay. For my essay, there were some problem areas where I needed to refresh my memory on giving credit to another person’s writing. I went to a reliable university site and refreshed on citations and quotations. I used a lot of quotations to prove my point. Hopefully, I used them right because it is not my intention to plagiarize. Overall, the essay made me think about the causes and effects of a certain subject. In addition, today’s activity was pretty fun; it’s nice to hear the different points of my peers.

  18. Test #3 was easy to explain and getting thoughts, but somehow I was procrastinating and did not prepare enough for it. Definitely, I need to put more effort on the rest of the test, and I also need to prepare and finish it earlier before the due date.
Today's activity was great. I liked to listen different thoughts and thesis from the colleagues. The brainstorm stretch was nice too. It was helpful for me because it helped me to expand my thoughts and think deeply.
