ReplyDeleteIn today’s class we discussed the matters of defining your controlling idea for your paper. The controlling idea contains both the subject and the focus of the topic you intend to write about. Writing about something you find enjoyable or interests you will make this process easy, as well as the rest of your paper. It really helps to write about something you enjoy and that interests you! In most cases, if your thesis or topic sentence is strong, your paper will follow. In short, good thesis with good supporting sentences equals a GREAT paper!!!
ReplyDeleteWriting about something that you love or you enjoy makes a good paper.
DeleteIt usually takes me a long time to write about a specific topic, but from today's class education, I learned about better techniques or strategies to help ourselves prepare for writing a better paper.
DeleteHey you wrote something similar to my blog. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?! We should have a study date. Whoop! Whoop!
DeleteI agree with you. If your thesis & topic is strong you'll definitely have a strong paper. It was kind of challenging for me but it's good because we learned more new things. If our thesis & topic is not strong but one part is we can still be able to fix them and have a strong paper.
DeleteI concur with what you said that writing about something that interests you will make it easier for you to write your paper, and that is why i decided to write about sports.
DeleteToday during class we discussed writing the controlling idea and organizing and developing support. The Controlling idea is about stating your focus so that the reader knows what is going on and does not get confused. We also discussed that with controlling Idea there has to be a support so that your views are stated clearly to the reader. We also talked about organizing the support of the focus and the three tools that will help your organization is clustering, brainstorming and outlining. In turn if all these steps are followed with a good thesis and a good support more than likely paper would be great.
ReplyDeleteFollowing these kinds of steps will definitely gear towards a better written paper :)
DeleteA descriptive essay allows the writer to venture into new territory of creativity. The writer can make you visualize the topic using vivid detail. When you write a descriptive essay you have to keep in mind that you are the only one who is familiar with the subject, so word choice is very important or else your reader will be confused.
ReplyDeleteToday’s lecture was challenging because I thought it was easy to write a topic sentence. Come find out there are ways to state your topic in a few words without being vague.
Your description of what a descriptive essay is, is very respectable. I agree that today's activities were challenging. It's pretty difficult to find that balance in the topic sentence.
DeleteI've always had trouble starting with topic sentences. I was either too vague or not vague enough lol. Writing or english was never my strong subject.
DeleteI agree that word choice is very important. It would help to make a strong thesis statement.
DeleteI also think that descriptive essays are very creative
DeleteI think the hardest part about today's lecture was finding that line between being too vague or too detailed for your topic sentence.
DeleteThat is a great thing to keep in mind. It will make the writer use as much descriptive words as they can so that the reader will know what the writer is trying to describe.
DeleteToday’s class was filled with multiple exercises on Stage 2 of the writing process which are writing the controlling idea and organizing and developing support. The exercises were quite fun and contained a lot of writing and practice. Shout out to the girl who volunteered to read and took my spot =) Overall today’s class was very chill along with being very informative!
ReplyDeleteThe class exercises was a ton of fun. It's good to see you have a friend that will help you.
DeleteI find exercises quite fun too just because their effective ways that stick to me. It actually helps me apply what I learned instead of just information that went in one ear and out the other.
Deletetoday's class was very informative and the exercises we had to do were very helpful.
DeleteToday's class was very informative.
DeleteTotally, it was definitely fun and it's always great learning new things! It's also great for us because we get to write better papers!
DeleteToday’s activities dealt with Stage Two of the Writing Process which had several exercises followed after. These exercises made it more helpful to understand how to control our ideas by having a subject and a focus. It was basically all about topics today to make sure it is not too vague or too broad. These topics can be used as our thesis statement. This chapter helped me further understand the steps into writing a great paper
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, ma'am. I'm interested in what your descriptive essay would be based on.
DeleteIt was definitely helpful on control ideas and how to focus more on the topic. It was another helpful exercise for the writing process!
DeleteI agree with you on those exercises. They were definitely helpful. It is good practice before we actually have to write an essay.
DeleteWriting a descriptive topic about an accident that has happened in my life would be the most pertaining selection. The reason this topic is interesting is because everyone has had their own accidents and it is a topic that can easily be written. Learning about one's accidents can be entertaining. In today's activity we went over topic sentences that helped strengthen my writing skills to write about specific topics. I will be using this technique for my writing assignments now.
ReplyDeleteI think so too! Writing something you've experienced would be beneficial to you and your reader.
DeleteAccidents are entertaining
DeleteI agree with writing something personal because it is easier to describe and you can well get into deal with it! It definitely help strengthen my writing skills as well!
DeleteA descriptive essay is a structured essay in which we describe anything from a person, place, and thing. We can also describe a personal experience we've encountered or even an emotion we have felt somewhere down our lives. I think I would talk about a personal experience because I believe that things are easier to talk about when they come from a real situation. I think today’s activities helped me to have a better understanding of what a good topic sentence is.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be writing about a person experience as well. I also agree that the exercises we did in class helped me better understand the work.
DeleteSame here, today's activities helped me to have a better understanding.
DeleteI would write a descriptive essay about my happy moments. I know it wouldn’t be hard at all because it’s all about my happy moments. I can be very detailed about it so it won’t be challenging at all. To be honest, what I learned in class today was kind of confusing. I got lost in the exercise where I had to judge whether it is effective or ineffective but I started to understand it in the end. Finding the subject and the focus is very easy. It’s a learning experience and I’m glad to be learning more about how to write a good essay.
ReplyDeleteI think writing about emotions you felt that were the most memorable makes a topic for a really good essay.
DeleteI like your idea of writing about happy moments. If it relates to you, it would be easier to write your essay. Good luck :D
DeleteDon't worry, happy moments are great to write about! Not many people focus on the good aspects of life, so your ability to see the sunshine through the rain is always something good to embrace!
DeleteI had a same issue as you, having hard time to define whether it is effective or ineffective, but after Dr. Rivera explained deeply, I got much better.
DeleteYes, I was right there next to you. We were both having trouble trying to answer the exercises. I'm still a bit confused about how specific it has to be. So I would like to work on making great thesis sentences with you!
DeleteI think a descriptive essay is an essay that describes a person, place, idea, experience, etc. It should appeal to the reader’s senses for it to be effective. For a topic I would probably write about my hometown because it’s something that appeals to me. Also, I think that I could write more about it and I can create something that will appeal to my audience. Today’s activities were a little challenging. To me, writing a topic sentence was pretty challenging because you don’t want to be vague on your subject and focus. Overall it was a great way to expand on your topic.
ReplyDeleteWriting about where you came from is a perfect topic for a descriptive essay.
DeleteI understand what you mean by,"writing a topic sentence is challenging." because I was going through the same thing. I couldn't exactly write it because it might be too general. Overall, I think as class goes on we'll be able to get on the right track & we won't have a challenging time anymore!
DeleteWell, I did a descriptive essay in high school but I don’t really remember how I formatted it. I remember that my main focus was about the word ‘gloomy.’ I choose that word because I wanted to write about the different ways it could be used as. That word could mean a gloomy sky or even describe a person when they are sad. So, to me a descriptive essay describes your topic word. It allows you to go more into detail with the word you chose and tell your readers the different ways it could be used. You could also write about your experience with that topic. Out of the descriptive topics, I would probably choose ‘A sad day in life.’ From the first time we went over the topics, that caught my attention. I would want to talk about graduation day. I find that it would be a unique and different way of describing a graduation because some may think of it as a very happy day.
ReplyDeleteI think writing about our graduation day would be perfect for you! Plus it'll be easy and exciting especially since it was a big day for us!
DeleteA descriptive essay is a paper that speaks mainly on one matter in detail which is vividly expressive. At first I thought about doing the topic, “falling in love” because there are pros and cons of love itself but I’m currently trying to select a different topic considering I’m not that passionate when it comes to relationships. However, I found pleasure in stage two simply because it was easy. Stating whether a topic sentence was effective or ineffective also helped me as a writer reflect on whether my topic sentence in my descriptive essay is effective.
ReplyDeleteI found that topic also interesting. However, I agree. I did not want to write about that topic because I'm not passionate when it comes to anything relationship related either.
DeleteThat would be an interesting topic also a very sensitive one as well. The exercises are pretty easy.
DeleteA descriptive essay is an essay that describes a person, place, thing or situation. The writer uses the senses (smell, touch, hearing, sight and taste) to provide their readers with a vivid scene about the topic. The essay gives details that will help the reader to picture what is being described. I think I would write about my experience traveling to these different places because that was something different for me and very memorable. Also, the activities today were a little bit challenging for me. I’m not great with dealing with topic sentences but hopefully I’ll get the hang out it by the end of the semester.
ReplyDeleteI love writing about places ive been because they are the most cherishable. That really does make a good topic for a good essay.
DeleteWriting about your experience traveling sounds pretty cool. I can't wait to read your essay.
DeleteIf it relates to you, it would be easier to write your essay. Even if you are not familiar writing with topic sentences, I know you will get better. That's what this class is for. I believe in you :)
DeleteThere's a lot of chances that we can still practice and review with topic sentences throughout this semester, for better understanding, MyReadingLab is also very helpful.
DeleteA descriptive essay is about going deep into a subject and describing about that certain thing. Out of the list, I decided on writing about falling in love with my partner. I chose this topic because it’s something that I can go into truly about my relationship and on how I felt about it. Anyways, today was informative. I now know how to start off my paragraphs with topic sentences. I loved today’s lesson and how I was motivated to completing all the exercises. This class always starts my day off great.
ReplyDeleteThis class makes my day too & I loved how motivated you were as well! Thanks for saving me.
DeleteI agree, this class starts my day off good. At first, I didn't like the sound of the last exercise we did. I thought it was going to be useless. However, as I started jotting down what I thought about the picture, a great story revealed. It was great practice for writing down topics for an essay or even the first paragraph.
DeleteA descriptive essay is self explanatory, you are going to be describing a particular event or anything that you what to share with others. I chose to write about a sport event that I found very exciting and it is easy for me to talk about. These essays allow us to share personal experiences with others and should allow the reader to feel as if they experienced that event with you. Today we went over topic sentences and it was a learning experience and sometimes tricky to write. It was a fairly easy subject to go over but regardless of that I still think I need some practice.
ReplyDeleteI also think the subject is easy
DeleteI chose to write about sports too! True these steps are pretty self explanatory, but the more practice the better!
DeleteSports is life...

ReplyDeleteToday, we discussed topic sentences. I have to write several topic sentences to get the right one. It is not always easy to write a topic sentence at one shot. I had to share my work today, but it was not that bad. Descriptive essays require thought and a lot of detail, which is sometimes frustrating. It is all about letting the reader know what you are talking about and making sure they understand the reading.
ReplyDeleteI agree, topic sentences are the sentences we tend to over think. thats why the exercises were great!
DeleteAs I was chosen to do my topic sentence I found myself over thinking when really it's very simple, the idea of having to think so much about a topic is frustrating, I agree!
DeleteA descriptive essay is a type of essay that asks the writer to describe something like an object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation, etc. In this type of essay there is a lot of writing freedom. You can talk about any topic and just describe the experience. If I were to pick a topic among the many options given, I would choose food. Why? Who doesn’t love food? There are so many types of food and many different flavors. Food is everywhere and will always be.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your thinking!
DeleteFood? Interesting choice! Reminds me of what my History of Guam teacher said, "Every dish has it's story." So, I think that would be a great topic to write about.
DeleteI believe descriptive essays are more than just words on a piece of paper.
ReplyDeleteIt’s an in-depth essay that grabs the audience’s or readers’ five senses and attention.
It creates a vivid image in their head to the point where they know exactly how the writer felt physically and emotionally. I find them the most enjoyable to listen to because instead of it being another presentation to the class it becomes “story-time”. With imagination, an assortment of colorful vocabulary, and great memories and experiences to talk about...just about anyone can write a descriptive essay!
Today we were taught how to create effective topic sentences to avoid the mistake of making them too broad, vague, or narrow. This is a great lesson because it can apply to all types of essay. What supporting details that follows after will just flow.
I was planning to write about procrastination because I always find my self in those types of situations. The stress level, the regret. Unfortunately, I know it all too well of. But who knows, something might just inspire me even more.
you definitely put my thoughts into words.
DeleteI think you should write about procrastination since writing something you experienced will be easier. Good luck on your essay!
DeleteI love your personal definition for Descriptive Essays. It sounds as if it came directly from a dictionary.
DeleteA descriptive essay is an essay that is used to describe something. Descriptive essays could be used to describe an experience that the person has gone through or an object that the person has owned. Your goal is to explain to the reader what you have gone through and try to make them experience what you did.
ReplyDeleteThe topic that I would describe would be my house. My house is something i’ve known my entire life and I know my house like a mouse knows cheese.
Todays topic was really just a continuation of what we did since the beginning of the semester.
I like your analogy with the mouse and cheese. The topic being your house is a very interesting selection. When someone reads your paper, I think it would be like giving them a tour around your house.
DeleteIn today’s discussion, the part I interesting most is the evaluating topic sentence of the controlling ideas. I have done this kind of exercise before, so it is uncomplicated and simple for me to define the subject and focus, but somehow, judge the sentence either is effective or ineffective was confusing to me. Anyway, after Dr.Rivera corrected my wrong answer and explained the reason why, I got a better understanding of how to define either is effective or ineffective and the better way I can think deeply. Overall, today’s activities were a great experience.
ReplyDeleteSome of them do get confusing but keep your head up! You did great girl (:
DeleteToday's activity was definitely a great experience! Glad to know that you are learning something new!
DeleteYeah I had a hard time as well judging whether it is effective or ineffective but as she explained it I understood it. We all make mistakes, Life is a learning experience and no one is perfect.
DeleteMy personal definition of a descriptive essay is writing down a certain topic so that the reader would feel or know entirely what you are trying to describe, whether it may be a special occasion or what you felt during that occasion. It gives us the ability to write freely using colorful words so that the reader would create the image in their head. From the topics listed in the document, I would choose Happy Moments because in that topic, I can already list the many things I can write about. For our class today, we discussed about the controlling idea in the topic sentence and did some exercises about topic sentences. Similarly to the other lessons, I feel like this is one of the beneficial topics for me because I have a problem on being too broad or too vague in the topic sentence. If only I had known that we were going to use our freewriting on other exercises, I should have chosen a better freewriting topic.
ReplyDeleteSame here! I also have a problem being too broad, that I find myself not exactly focusing on one thing.
