Reflection - Sept. 16 - Narrative Essay - Sec. 11

Visit URL: http://mnrivera1.com/Four_Major_Essays.pdf In your own words, discuss what a narrative essay is. View the topics listed. Discuss which narrative topic you would select and why. Please note that this will also be reviewed for Test #2. Further reflect on today’s overall activities.

  1. A narrative essay is to be told in first person. I find that when writing a narrative essay it is easier to write it from a experience. This is because you have first hand accounts of what took place. When we started CLUESS I was clueless. The language section was the most interesting. We were able to read in different expressions, which gave us great insight and a much needed laugh.

    1. I agree that narrative essays should be easy to write. I was also clueless when we were talking about CLUESS but now i have a better understanding of what it is.

    2. I agree that the language par was interesting because it showed how that the same sentence with a little change and a change in expression will make a big difference.

    3. Haha, the language section was a good laugh!

    4. The language section was the only experience that I ever have before. :D

    5. I went class late so I did not really understand what was going on. Technically, I was clueless but when she started going back to the board and wrote down other acronyms I understood.

    6. I agree. We should totally have more activities that give us a laugh.

  2. A narrative essay is story that is written about a personal experience. I don’t know what I’d write about for my narrative essay. I would probably write about something that has had a big impact on my life. And today’s activities were really interesting. I think following the acronyms, CLUESS and CGPS, would be a huge help in writing my essay.

    4. It is difficult to select a specific topic because of the wide range of selections, but choosing a topic that has had a big impact in your life or, like Sarah has mentioned, something you find interesting would be a start.

The acronyms were a smart idea. It is easy to remember and it would help a lot in writing an essay.

    5. I totally agree.Think of it as a descriptive essay, but with all parts of a story.

    6. I totally agree with the acronyms. Introducing us to the acronyms was helpful. And I have a suggestion for your essay: PROM!

  3. Today’s class was pretty fun. We got to improve our rough drafts and practice more on it. The most entertaining thing today was reading the dialogues in different tones. It was fun and we all got a good laugh out of it. I’m starting to become more confident and comfortable with the way we do things in this class as well being around my classmates =)

  4. In a narrative essay you are telling a story from beginning to end. What makes this type of essay easy to write is that you are retelling the story about what happened to you. I think I will write about a vacation I went on in 2013. Today’s class was alright, I thought it was funny when we were going over tone.

    4. Writing about your vacation can be very long. If you choose to stick with your vacation as a topic, only write about the moments that will last for a lifetime.

  5. A narrative essay is like telling a story. These types of essays are often anecdotal, experiential, and personal. Narrative essays allow the writer to express his/her feelings and also to be very creative while writing. If I were to choose a topic to write about, I would write about my first day at a new job -working at the airport. Today’s class was no different from the other days (not boring). I’m always learning new things and it was fun listening to some of our classmates read in different tones.

  6. I hated the way my day started, but I’m glad this class slightly eased my soul. Today we learned how to rewrite, revise, and edit which is the third stage of the writing process. I enjoyed today’s readings because we were able to express certain emotions which was entertaining. I learned how to revise using CLUESS that helped me further understand how to make my essay better and more informative. Overall, this class made my day better and I’m glad that we were in the computer center today. I enjoy blogging 

  7. A narrative essay is an essay in which we tell a story through personal experience. I think there are plenty of topics to talk about in a narrative essay. I would definitely write about an embarassing moment or maybe my last day at one of the worst jobs I have ever worked. Me and Ixora were pretty much peer editing papers, and I think understanding the process of CLUESS more was more helpful for me to have a better essay.

    1. Person experiences are easy to talk about so writing it shouldn't be too difficult. When you brought up the peer review I realized that i should start on my essay.

    2. I was actually telling Dr. Rivera that I can't believe the peer editing portion of class really needs all your attention. I enjoyed peer reviewing your paper and I can't wait to read the rest! Oh, and heads up for the entire class, Dr. Rivera said it'd be even better to get your paper peer reviewed by more than one student. Just saying c:

    3. There are numerous topics to write about like the descriptive essay. I would totally read about your "embarrassing moment," sounds like it'll be interesting.

    4. I would totally read about either of your topics because they seem very interesting and relative to me as well. Also, I'm glad that CLUESS helped you.

  8. In today’s class the topic was about writing the first draft of an essay. The section gave us clues to look out for that would help improve our essay to flow, stay on point and to get the audience intrigued into the subject we would be writing about. The clues are coherence, language, unity, emphasis, support, and sentences. If you work on these aspects of your essay the essay would become a great essay. The reason is it would make the essay flow, not choppy and there would be adequate support to your views or story.

    1. CLUESS should help us write better essays and I hope my essays are well written. Another acronym that will help us with our essays is CGPS which stands for Capitalization, Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling.

    2. Yup, and you would definitely have one great paper! I know this would help us in so much ways!

  9. Today we learned how to write a Narrative essay. A narrative essay is like telling a story & it is personal so it will be told like it is happening or you made the story come to life. The only thing I might have a problem with is I might be jumping from one topic to another or get overwhelmed. I would write about a memorable journey. That journey would be motherhood. I became a teen mom, so I was obviously young when I had my first child. He brought so much joy and happiness to my life & my families.

    1. Topics like those really catch an audience because its so surreal and its in your point of view, whcih makes the paper really interesting and entertaining

    2. Your essay would be very interesting to read. It is rare that one will share about their motherhood journey that started at a young age. Paolo is right about your topic. I hope all is well with you and your son.

  10. Today, we did an activity on writing a rough draft. It is difficult to write a paragraph when I am feeling under pressure to get it done quickly, but it turned out all right. We went over the meaning of CLUESS. I learned it is better to more specific in your writing so that the readers have a better understanding of what you are trying to say.

    1. Specifying your essay definitely gives your audience a picture to draw in your head. Overall, the things we went over helped in improving our essays!

    2. I agree! I too, do not like writing under pressure. I tend to get nervous then my thoughts are all over the place which takes me even longer just to write a paragraph. Your draft about technology was good tho! I wasn't even thinking about that. Nice!

  11. Today’s lesson was slow to me. I think I was just out of it. We went over stage three of the writing process, which is writing, revising and editing. I think it’s straight forward so I didn't pay attention when we were reading some parts. Then we went over an acronym that helps you write a good essay and make good revisions. This acronym is CLUESS. We then went over each word in the acronym and it further explained the meaning. These words are a guide for you to write a good essay. To me, you are in control when you write a narrative essay. You can make the essay you are writing about go the way you want your readers to perceive it. It is up to you, just as long as you make it appealing to your audience. There is many topics on the list of narrative essays that I find interesting. I’m not sure which one I would choose yet. Maybe I would pick the one about me, the first time I visited a place or a memorable journey.

    1. I totally agree with being in control of what you write. As long as your audience is able to picture it then it should be well entertaining.

    2. I was lost too so I understand but as we kept on going on with the lesson i started to understand it more. It definitely felt so long. I felt like we were either too slow but then again we were enjoying all those different kind of tones!

  12. A narrative essay is one that is used to explain something in almost the same way you would tell a story, but it won’t be written as a story. In a narrative essay you are expected to narrate the essay. You are expected to go into your essay on a deeper level since its something you’ve experienced. Make your readers cry make them feel what you felt at that time.

A topic that I would probably choose is a memorial journey, because I have gone on many trips. It’s just going to be hard to choose which trip. Memorial journeys will be a fun one, because its easier to recall a memory when you’re adrenaline is rushing

  13. Today, we discussed the third stage of the writing process; it was very informative with numerous sections. This stage is basically writing and editing. Overall, today’s activities were entertaining and informative. So now, what is a narrative essay? A narrative essay is an essay that tells a story. It has similar qualities to a descriptive essay. It is usually a story, but can be informative like a book report. If I were to write a narrative essay, I would write about my first day at a new school because it was a very momentous event in my life.

    1. I agree, it really does share the same qualities as a descriptive essay. It's pretty great how writing the descriptive essay first will be beneficial in writing a narrative essay afterwards. :)

Just a suggestion, to add some variety or some zest to the topic you chose, it'd be great to hear about the first days of the different level of educations (elementary, middle, and high school). Each level could be the 3 main supporting paragraphs and points. :D

  14. A narrative essay is an essay where the writer has the opportunity to express their inner most thoughts, feelings, and share their personal perspective about the topic at hand. I think a great topic mentioned was "A significant understanding" because it doesn't just focus on your point of view but also the other individual. Misunderstandings (verbal and nonverbal) is something every in society can relate to, so I think I can have a lot to say about it.
Lastly, what we learned about today was the last stage of the writing process "Writing the First Draft". It's very important to pay closely attention to the coherence, language, emphasis, unity, support, sentences structure, and editing. The outcome, although the many steps involved, will lead to a effective and pleasurable to hear essay.

  15. A narrative essay is a way of telling a story based on personal experience. When the words “narrative essay” comes to mind, at first, I think of the word “narrative”.

Out of the topics listed, I would select about my first visit to the country, or a large city. A few months ago, I went on a trip with my teammates in the mainland for a competition. It was very memorable and special to me because that was the first time I went to a different country with just my friends and without assistance from my family. I feel like if I write about it, I would not only be revisiting the country, but also the moments I created.

During class today, I was not able to read aloud because I was peer-reviewing a fellow classmate’s essay. Peer reviewing had its advantages, such as not being able to share my thoughts about an exercise, and also disadvantages, such as not being able to focus on the reading being discussed in class. Although I was not able to participate much in class, I found that one exercise, where they had to read a text with a certain emotion, funny and interesting.

    1. I am also looking at that topic to write about. I get what you mean about going on a trip without your family. I have been to 5 asian countries without my parents and it would've been a totally different experience if I was with family. So, I think this is a great and interesting topic that would be good for us, because it would totally bring back memories. Wow! I think I finally decided on what topic to write about. I had two other ideas but replying to your blog made me realize this topic is a real great one, and it would be fun to write about. Thanks!

  16. A narrative essay is a creative, short way to tell a story. It’s a way of getting more in depth with an experience that you may have encountered. I found the topics we were given very humorous, for example “a disastrous date.” The topics I am looking at doing is “a visit to a country or large city,” “a dangerous experience,” or “an event that marked a turning point in your life.”

Today, we spoke about rough drafts and the usage of “cluess.” I found the topic rather, boring. Probably because it’s something I struggle with. I struggle with writing my rough draft however, once I start it gets easier. So, I don’t understand why I find it so dreadful.

    1. Even I giggled at the "disastrous date" topic. I was that close to writing about it because I'm sure it'd be funny to read to the class if we end up presenting.

I think writing a rough draft is not too fun either! But if you think about it, even if we don't realize it, everything we write is a rough draft because we're constantly correcting and editing it. I guess we don't feel it as much because technology has given us the pleasure to backspace instead of the using the almighty white out. x)

  18. In my own words, I would say a narrative essay a story written about personal experience. Writing a narrative essay is very helpful and it could be a opportunity for better understanding yourself and get to know yourself deeply. I would like to select the topic "A memorable journey" . Somehow I feel like is going to be more easier and uncomplicated to write about based on my own experience. And the purpose of writing this essay is that I want to recall my wonderful trip through my memories.
BTW, today's activity was pretty awesome. It's a significant way for me to improve my essay writing skills and reading.

  19. In today’s class, we reviewed what a narrative essay is. A narrative essay tells a story, especially about a personal experience. We also discussed the acronym CLUESS. With this acronym, the writer can use it to revise and edit his/her essay. As we read about it, I realized how helpful it can be when I am writing my essay. Today’s class was very funny and informative.
