Reflection - Dec. 4 - Writing the Controlling Idea/Organizing and Developing Support - Sec. 14

Visit this URL: http://www.umuc.edu/writingcenter/onlineguide/chapter2-10.cfm Now that you are well familiar with a controlling idea/organizing and developing support, discuss a topic sentence that would be good to explore for the Christmas Break.

Example: Yesterday, I had an unusual Christmas celebration at the Field House.

Please note that the above topic sentence enables the audience to inquire what kind of experience you've had and why it was unusual.

In addition, discuss your thoughts on today's class activities.

  1. If I were to pick a topic sentence to explore on my Christmas break, it would be, "I want to spend my entire Christmas break in Hawaii." I really want to see my friends in Hawaii during the Christmas break, and do things I can't do here on Guam. Other than that, I worked on my moodle assignments.

  2. The topic that I would choose is to spend my entire Christmas in the Philippines. I want to spend my entire Christmas in the Philippines, because it is fun to spend Christmas with my family, friends, and relatives. Celebrating Christmas in Guam is boring. There are many things to do in the Philippines for Christmas that Guam do not have. That Is why most people called "It is more fun in the Philippines."

It's lots of fun picking out Christmas presents for others, sometimes we don't realize how much money we spend. Hopefully, you guys wont suffer as much as I would and have a lovely Christmas!

  4. My topic statement pertaining to my Christmas break would be "It is beginning to look a lot like bankruptcy." It'll be the first Christmas in which I am able to buy presents for my friends and family. Although presents shouldn't matter as much as spending the day with your loved ones, it's still a nice thought. I can already tell that this Christmas will make my wallet, and probably other people's wallets, cry. Unfortunately, I have yet to finish my Christmas shopping.

  5. My topic sentence would be "The joy of Christmas" because we get to spend it with all our loved ones. We share the laughter, memories and joy amongst each other over a wonderful dinner. It is not all about the presents, but the people who you spend Christmas with. And that is what Christmas is all about.

  9. My topic sentence would be "Winter no-break". A friend of mine always begged me to help him fix his project car, but I had no time to help fix it because of school. Now that I would be a couple of weeks out of school, I could finally help him fix his car. It will be a little Christmas gift from me to him. I just hope he doesn't wreck it like the last one!

  10. If I were to pick a topic sentence to explore on my Christmas break, it would be, "Christmas is the time to give." I would choose this topic sentence because this year I would like to give each member in my household a gift. I want to remind them of how much I appreciate each on of them and the sacrifices they make. Besides my family, I would also like to help people outside of my family. I would like to help the less fortunate. I went to Notre Dame so I'm used to going out into the community and giving back. An example would be when I went to Catholic Social Services. We got to do different tasks. My day overall was good. I just went to Math class and listened too a presentation. The rest of the day, I slept.

  11. My topic sentence would be "When the Family Bond Grows". On Christmas, the whole family, and some friends who do not have family on Guam, gathers at my Uncle's house. The men eat, drink, laugh, and talk about politics or personal issues. The women and children are inside with the gifts. After all the gifts are opened, the kids play with their new toys and brag to each, the teenagers complain about school, and the women are gossiping. Afterwards, everyone gathers for a family picture, including our family-friends. As the night goes on, everyone becomes closer to each other, problems have their solutions, and it feels like we have been seeing everyone everyday. It has always been the day when all troubles are tossed out the window and everyone has fun.

Today we did our last moodle session. It kind of makes me sad that the semester is ending already.

  12. My topic sentence would be "Christmas with the family in the Philippines". Guam is fun too but I would have to say Philippines has more things to do like fireworks, cheap food and all them good fun things. If Guam has them then I would have to choose Guam.

  17. My topic sentence would be "Why am I buying them gifts?" Every Christmas I spend most of my money buying gifts for friends I just met or don't spend much time with. I'd rather spend it on my family to show them my gratitude for at least once in the year. But I know they're buying me gifts and I just want to return the gratitude.
