Run on sentences are hard to stay away from, especially when your thoughts are flowing on the page. But that is what editing is for, you can review your work and correct your mistakes. That is of you can notice them. Today's class was stressful. The practice tests scare me knowing that the exit exam could be harder.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really good tip for those struggling from run-on sentences! You're right, editing is KEY.
DeleteThese practice exams actually make me more confident with my writing ability because it simulates the actually final exam.
DeleteThe practice exams help me, but you're right they can be stressful because they are difficult.
Deletesame here, I thought it was a bit stressful & started to think the exit was going to be harder for me to do.
DeleteWriting in general is stressful, unless you love to write.
DeleteUgh, your telling me. I agree. This class practice exit exam really did get to me. I am not even kidding
DeleteExit exams are pretty scary, thats why its a good thing we could practice!
DeleteOnce you take the time to read your essay, you find out what mistakes you've made. We never see the run on sentences because we are just making words flow.
DeleteThe practice tests scare me too because I feel like there's so little time to write out my essay.
DeleteI try my best not to over think about the exit exam. You should try it because I know we can pass it. If you over think of the exit exam you might just set yourself up to fail. So just always think positive and practice.
DeleteAgreed. It was really stressful to think so fast.
DeleteI like to avoid run-on sentences because once a reader is lost or becomes uninterested, everything else they read that follows will seem like a continuous drag. Speaking from personal experience, I too even become very confused and bored from them. Sentence structure and flow should be every writer's priority.
ReplyDeleteBesides the final exit exam, there is not much going on in class today. Although I am exhausted from writing papers, exit exams have proven themselves to be VERY beneficial. I learn a lot from the interesting prompts given. It serves as an inspiration and good practice that I can use for future use
I agree that sentence structure helps keep readers interested with what they are reading. When a book is hard to understand, I end up not wanting to finish reading it.
DeleteThe is true!! Writing is all about keeping the reader interested. If you allow them to straw from your reading then you have failed as a writer.
DeleteThese essay practices are really beneficial because I need to prepare for the final exam.
DeleteI too am very exhausted from papers but I'm keeping in mind it will help me throughout the next 3 1/2 years.
DeleteI agree, run-on sentences can lose a person when reading. Although, with all these practices, I am pretty sure it'll be easier to avoid.
DeleteI agree, this exam was beneficial :) It helps us practice more and more.
DeleteI agree. The practice exams are beneficial. I believe that I improved with the time constraints with these essays.
DeleteAs I was reviewing my essay, I noticed a lot of run-on sentences. This practice exam was very much needed. I do not really practice writing essays so I'm glad that Dr. Rivera made us do another one. Today's class was beneficial because it helped me improve a little better at writing. I used to get stuck at writing essays, but now it seems to be flowing a little more easily. :)
ReplyDeleteI too believe that these practice exams are helping to improve my writing skills. I am finding it easier to figure out what I want to talk about when given a specific topic.
DeleteYou have so many run on sentences because you enjoy the topic that you were writing about, there it so much info that you want to input but so little space to write.
DeleteLucky for you, but unfortunately for me I still get stuck writing these kind of essays. They are really helpful though.
DeleteThese have been helping me also but I continue to get stuck starting my essays, hopefully I can work on that.
DeleteI don't write essays for fun so today was a good way to practice and it was also very stressful.
DeleteThats what I was saying, the more we do essays, the better we get at doing it!
DeleteI agree the practice exam was much needed! I sometimes too do not notice my run on sentences, so it is go to be aware of them.
DeleteI also made the same errors. Luckily, these essays are improving my writing with the time constraints.
DeleteI'm not a big fan of the practice essay but whatever helps us become better writers, I'm up for it! I'm glad we do the practice even though it's hard to write about sometimes.
DeleteWe should avoid run-on sentences because it makes it harder for the reader to understand what you are trying to say. In today's class we had to write a practice essay and what I do to make it easier for me is that I think of our essay brain stretchers. Doing so helps me form different ideas of what to talk about, and not become confused as I am writing.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right, the essays are very helpful!
DeleteI agree, practicing really helps me to watch myself.
DeleteYes, it is best if we avoid run on sentences! That is a good way to expand your essay and have others understand it easily as well.
DeleteRun on sentences really are a pain to read and understand. I think its the first thing people should learn to avoid.
DeleteAs people always say, practice makes perfect :)
DeleteI totally agree. Run-on sentences are hard to miss and readers lose interest. The practice essays are definitely beneficial.
DeleteYou're right! It's very hard for the reader to understand it clearly.
DeleteAvoiding run-on sentences is vital to a good essay because it could make the reader uninterested with the topic. the reason is they would not understand the point you are trying to get across because you are making them uninterested and bored. Run-on sentences can also confuse a person and they could miss understand your view point.
ReplyDeleteI concur, when reading material with run-on sentences or an abundance of grammatical errors, it becomes difficult to finish reading.
DeleteI agree. Run ons very well confuse people. So, it is good to be aware of them whenever you are writing.
DeleteTRUE! The reader can miss understand you and it will get them bored. They will not go further on with reading the essay or story the writer made.
DeleteRun-on sentences should be avoided because it sounds weird and is improper. Also, it will make it harder for the reader to understand what exactly we are trying to say. In today's class, we did a practice essay and i thought it was difficult because it takes a long process for me to write. Although I don't enjoy it, I appreciate it because it really does help my writing skills. Overall, today was pretty chill.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed writing the practice essay. I thought it was going to be hard, but talking from experience helped me finish in a matter of no time.
DeleteI somewhat enjoy it because we definitely need the practice. I too appreciate it cause some teachers might not even give their students this opportunity, so thank you Dr. Rivera :)
DeleteI totally agree, run-on sentences do make it hard for a reader to understand the subject. The practice test does help me with improving my writing skills.
DeleteWe should most definitely avoid run-on sentences although for myself is hard to do. I think I've had to correct my run-ons a few times today because my thoughts were flowing. I found this essay stressful only because I didn't feel too well. I started to think I should've stayed home but knew I couldn't because of this reason. I was typing my essay but didn't want to go through the hassle of finding a flash drive and printing it else where so I started to write it. Once I started, I found the essay easy to carryout so it went on just fine. This class wasn't as great as usual for me, but it's better than my worst days (:
ReplyDeleteI wish i could stay home and sleep in as well. Unfortunate my world has me caught between work and school.
DeleteI also make those types of mistakes due to thoughts just flowing, plus I'm super tired. :)
DeleteA run-on is a sentence that clashes with other sentences without any punctuation marks, which confuses everything. Avoiding these types of mistakes can be difficult to dodge but there is always editing at the end. In addition, I'm pretty sure a number of us are guilty of making mistakes like that. Overall, today was a good day even though we had to write another practice exam. "Practice makes perfect".
ReplyDeleteagreed, although writing essays on the spot isn't something I do well, "practice makes perfect."
DeleteRun on sentences are a tricky thing to avoid. When you’re feeling the topic and you want to write and let your mind flow onto the paper, its easy to forget that you still have to be grammatically correct. Although run on sentences are tricky, it doesn’t mean that its hard to avoid. With just some awareness of what you’re writing, you’ll be able to put periods in proper places and be grammatically correct.
ReplyDeleteSometimes they are, no doubt. I find myself making these simple mistakes. Sometimes I can just write and write and forget I have a run on sentence.
DeleteRun on sentences can sometimes become a habit. For me, I catch myself making run out sentences for my essays that I write for the test. It is best that when I am finished that I review my essays or have someone else review it for me. They always catch my run on sentences and I am glad that they show me ways to fix and kick the habit.
ReplyDeleteTotally, it's a habit that's hard to shake off, but definitely have to avoid. The peer reviews does help because I also make the same mistakes.
DeleteThat is true. It was a bad habit for myself as well until I kept practicing and I managed to work it off. Do not worry, it will get easy for you to not make those mistakes and you will not even notice you stopped the run on sentences.
DeleteI try to avoid run on sentences to the best of my abilities because it is not only improper, but sometimes makes you look like you are not familiar with basic grammar structure. Other than than, I somewhat enjoyed another exit exam practice. Even if I can be lazy, it is a good practice to make sure I test out of EN-100.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot do much about run on sentences if you are just flowing on your essay. You can always go back and check on it as well.
DeleteI can relate to you. Testing out of EN100 is very important to me :D I'm determined to use the final exit exams as practice
DeleteYou've been working so hard, I'm pretty sure you will test our of EN100:)
DeleteI try not to incorporate any run on sentences, because it shows the lack of basic grammar and sentence structure an individual has. I hope that I don't make those errors, but if I do, I would correct them to the best of my ability. The practice exam was exceptional; it wasn't too hard and it wasn't too easy. I actually enjoyed the topic in this essay. Overall, today was a great day. =)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a great day, jewel!
DeleteI agree with you. For me on the other hand, I had a hard time on the practice test. I do not have a hard time with run on sentences just like you but I do have minor mistakes which i correct as soon as I see it. Sometimes it is caused by thinking to much and you do not notice you are typing it together.
DeleteI find it hard to stay away from run-on sentences. I think it confuses readers and it makes it difficult to understand, that's why it's better to cut it down.
ReplyDeleteI liked today's class period. I found it hard to write and get my ideas out at first but once I got into it, it became easier for me. Hopefully I'll do much better on our next one. Today's class was pretty chill and I liked being in the computer lab. :)
I'm guilty of doing them too, but with proper editing it will become easier and easier to identify and correct them. You'll get the hang of them, don't worry! :D
DeleteI had a fairly difficult time with our practice exit exam as well. It was hard for me to put my thoughts into words or my words into complete sentences. I'm just glad we are over and done with it.
DeleteTo stay away from run-on sentences is hard, especially for me as a second language learner:(

ReplyDeleteI remember always having run on sentences when I was younger. Although I still have some minor mistakes, I catch it right away and correct it .Today we did a practice exit exam and it took me by surprise, mostly because I was not expecting to do that today. It was also hard for me to think of the topic and put it into words. My thoughts were just all over the place today. It was kind of challenging but I got through it.
ReplyDeleteIt was hard for me too:( However, it was just a practice:)
DeleteRun-on sentences are hard to avoid it, especially when we doing timing essay. However, we should avoid it in order to make our reader think less and doubt the sentences whether is run-on or not.
ReplyDeleteToday, we did an exit exam practice. The topic was easy to understand, but when I started to write, it was hard to give examples and sort of confusing to explain the reasons.
agreed it was.
DeleteRun-on sentences are sometimes hard to avoid sometimes. Although, it can be quite easy to catch, it might not be as easy to avoid. When I write research papers or a reflection, I get caught up in making run-on sentences. However, at least I do catch it and separate it into two sentences or so. Even though I came in 10 minutes late, I felt like I was rushing throughout the whole practice exit exam. It was also hard for my thoughts to flow because I kept getting nervous about the time.
ReplyDeleteWe should avoid run-on sentences because it would confuse audiences, and readers. Its something I know I need to work on, as well as everyone else. I felt very off-gaurd with timed essays and I still feel like thats something I need to work on, and I hope to get better at it.
