Visit this URL: http://www.umuc.edu/writingcenter/onlineguide/chapter2-10.cfm Now that you are well familiar with a controlling idea/organizing and developing support, discuss a topic sentence that would be good to explore for the Christmas Break.
Example: Yesterday, I had an unusual Christmas celebration at the Field House.
Please note that the above topic sentence enables the audience to inquire what kind of experience you've had and why it was unusual.
In addition, discuss your thoughts on today's class activities.

Topic: What has the Christmas season become about in this day and age?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I'm happy to be back at class after being away for a month. I missed class discussions and active participation through reading and answering the activity questions. I liked the discussion of argument because in my opinion it is an easy paper to write because you need textual evidence and facts. Although it takes more time and effort to do the research, everything is there and provided for you through your sources.
Welcome back!
DeleteYes, welcome back Erin. You missed the donuts on Tuesday.
DeleteWELCOME BACK ERIN!
DeleteI REALLY like your topic sentence. During Christmas, its really a time of giving and I can only hope it does not matter what is being received. It would be interesting to see if the same idea applies to the rest of our generation and the topic sentence you have created would shine light on that perspective. :)
Welcome back Erin! (:
DeleteI know you can get everything done because you are a hard worker! I agree it take a lot more time to collect information and double checking if it is accurate or not.
After reading the given site, a topic I would like to explore would be “The history of the Santa Suit”. I think it would be interesting to research because I always wondered how it was so popular and why it was.
ReplyDeleteOverall, today’s activities included reading and doing exercises after. I thought it was a pretty okay day and I enjoyed it very much. It was easy going and I learned the understanding of fallacies.
It was also an okay day for me.
DeleteToday's class was alright. I was confused in the beginning, but the exercises helped me understand the lesson.
DeleteYour topic made me smile! :D Now that you have mentioned it, where did Santa's suit originate from and what is the true story and meaning behind it? COOL TOPIC.
DeleteToday we did a short lecture about Argument essays and read examples. We also did activities reflecting on the examples. I enjoyed it and you really need to read everything before you answer anything because you can get confused. Overall, I had a good time.
ReplyDeleteI agree, you have to read and comprehend the material before you try to answer questions about that reading.
DeleteThat's true. We need to read and understand everything before we do the practice. Otherwise, we do not do good as we imaged.
DeleteDuring this class, we went over an argumentative essay and how it flows. The paragraph about Debbie interest me although I didn't show it. It reminded me of an immediate family member. I felt as if I was only here physically and not mentally until this exercise.
ReplyDeleteI was also very intrigued by the story about Debbie.
DeleteDon't be so hard on yourself Chille! :D It's only human to have those types of days. I hope you feel better more and more through out the day.
DeleteI can relate to you. I was physically in class but mentally I was lost. I tried my best to get on track. The Debbie example was interesting and it did catch my attention but overall we learn new things every day, so you can say I learned to pay more attention.
DeleteSomething that I would like to research more about that is Christmas related would be how the mistletoe came about. Why do people kiss under them? I think it would be a really interesting topic!
ReplyDeleteThat would be a really interesting topic!
DeleteI agree, i don't know the origin of that tradition so it would be interesting to know where it came from.
DeleteWhere did the mistletoe come from? Now I'm curious! Time to google. :D
DeleteNow, you got me interested. Why do people kiss under the mistletoe? I think it's because Justin Bieber influences a lot of youth now. I am totally kidding, but I'll go search it up now =)
DeleteSo interesting of your topic! I still does not know what mistletoe is.
DeleteThe topic really caught my attention as well. I think most of them did. I really do not understand why people do kiss under the mistletoe. It is kind of mind blowing how everyone just follows the traditions or those customs now.
DeleteThat is an interesting topic! I'm actually not familiar with the mistletoe until I watched something about it on the television. I knew that Christmas is the time for appreciation, family and giving, but I wonder how is the mistletoe related to any of the three?
DeleteI would probably research "how Christmas is celebrated in different countries?"
ReplyDeleteIn today's class we went over logical fallacies. I found the lesson to be kind of confusing but the exercises helped me identify different kinds of fallacies.
I also found the lesson confusing but interesting.
DeleteI like your topic a lot, that is something I will think about as a travel the world.
DeleteIt was sort of confusing in the beginning, but I agree, the exercises did help a lot. Your topic is very interesting, it makes you think about how other cultures celebrate Christmas. For example, do they put up a Christmas tree or is that prohibited?
DeleteInteresting topic, haha!!! In my hometown, we don't celebrate Christmas:(
DeleteI was lost as well, do not worry. I knew as class went on we would be able to understand them all.
DeleteI think your topic is very interesting. I have witnessed myself how two different cultures celebrate Christmas. They are so different and also alike in many ways. I wonder how about the other cultures.
DeleteDuring class we spoke about logical fallacies. Although it was challenging identifying them, I really liked speaking about the topic. I see why it is common for writers to find themselves victims of logical fallacies. In the heat of an argument (verbal/non-verbal) I personally feel that it is harder to think cognitively while I speak. If I already know I don't have the logical evidence to back up what I say I refrain from speaking, so learning from past experiences and what our reading discussed, its good to know I'm not the only that is a victim. :)
ReplyDeleteA good topic sentence (in my opinion) to explore during the Christmas Break would be:
"Besides the presents under the tree, I am most thankful for non-materialistic items."
Not everyone is given a gift wrapped in a bow, but there are a lot of things to be grateful for nonetheless. In order to identify them and explain why it means a great deal would be a good thing to do during a time of appreciation. Whether it be the little things or someone special to you, we can all agree on how positive it would be to focus on the good instead of the bad. ❤
I also thought that they were hard to distinguish. That is a great topic to research about, it's not always about the material things. =)
DeleteI like your topic sentence, Ixora. I feel like it is becoming too common that people think that they have to give some tangible gift to someone for them to enjoy it. And I agree with you, that there are a lot of things to be grateful for. :)
DeleteI think a good topic to research over Christmas break would be about how we started snowboarding. Its a topic that hits home as I have experience snowboarding and have broken my collarbone snowboarding.
ReplyDeleteIn class today we learned about logical fallacies and how people tend to write in the same manner that they speak. This is a mistake in writing that I have known about and I try to avoid it in my writing. I know a guy personally that used to write in the same way that he talks, I called him out for it and told him that he will need to change the way he writes.
I've caught myself writing the same way I speak but that has only happened a few times.
DeleteI am sorry to hear about your broken collarbone, but I am sure that you're so good at snowboarding that you won't ever break anymore bones.
DeleteWhoa, I'm sorry to hear about your broken collarbone. And yeah, people do write in the same manner as they speak and they should totally avoid that, especially in formal writing.
DeleteWoah! A broken collarbone? That is crazy!
DeleteBut yeah, I have done that many times. I always have to write and rewrite my sentences when I do that.
In my opinion, a good topic to research over Christmas break would be: How did eggnog become a Christmas treat?
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty fascinating how eggnog is such a Christmas delight, wouldn't you want to know the origin of when and why it started?
Today, I was unable to go our class, and so I went to her section 13 class. I missed all of you guys! We covered the same material. Learning about false fallacies made me think about my essay and how I could have made it better. Now, I know that I should avoid them at all times and triple check my essay to make sure it doesn't contain any.
Overall, today's class time was pretty great.
What an interesting topic! It sounds so unfamiliar and curious to me.
DeleteThat is a very interesting topic sentence. I've heard of eggnog before, but I still wonder how are eggnog and Christmas related.
DeleteI knew it! There was someone missing in the back row, but I'm glad that you were still able to attend class.
Eggnog? Wow! Nice choice.
DeleteI missed you today Jewel! I wish you made it to class! I even tried to save a seat for you!
The topic I would like to explore would be: I had an incredible Christmas gift. Every time I wanted something for Christmas, but this time, I was not only had a gift but it was also an unexpected gift that was surprised me.
ReplyDeleteThis is a interesting topic for me because it is with a sense of mystery.
Today's activity was great. We went over logical fallacies and did some practice. I realized that the practice was sort of tricky, so that we really needed to pay double attention and understand the meanings of each logical fallacy. I guess I think to do more practice in order to skilled it.
That is an interesting topic! And I agree, logical fallacies can be very tricky. I got my answer on the third try.
Delete“The spirit of giving during Christmas is contagious” is the topic sentence that I would love to explore in relation to Christmas.
ReplyDeleteFor class today, it felt as if it was shortened, maybe because the semester is ending soon. As for the activities, I greatly enjoyed the exercise where we were to determine which type of fallacy was used in the sentence. Overall, I thought it was a great day.
That is a good topic! I would want to know why it is so contagious.
DeleteThe topic sentence I would explore would be how mythical creatures like the "reindeer" came about. As for today's class, it was short but very relaxing and informative. The readings and exercises that we participated in class were fun. I was pretty intrigued of how complicated and difficult logical fallacies can be. Overall though, today was a great day.
ReplyDeleteToday's class was short. However, the lesson confused me. The exercises were also a bit difficult compared to our other exercises. It was informative though, because it is good to know what sentence structures we should avoid.
ReplyDeleteOther than Thanksgiving, December in general is my favorite month. Not only do we celebrate Christmas but it's also a month of getting into the holiday spirit. I absolutely love to go shopping for gifts for others. The topic I would want to research about would probably be ‘The true meaning of Christmas,' because people often foget about the real meaning.
I think a good topic to research over Christmas break would be about how we started snowboarding.
