Reflection - Dec. 4 - Writing the Controlling Idea/Organizing and Developing Support - Sec. 13

Visit this URL: http://www.umuc.edu/writingcenter/onlineguide/chapter2-10.cfm Now that you are well familiar with a controlling idea/organizing and developing support, discuss a topic sentence that would be good to explore for the Christmas Break.

Example: Yesterday, I had an unusual Christmas celebration at the Field House.

Please note that the above topic sentence enables the audience to inquire what kind of experience you've had and why it was unusual.

In addition, discuss your thoughts on today's class activities.

  1. The topic that would be good to explore for the Christmas Break would be the importance of gifts because I believe that gifts are a symbol of appreciation and sharing. Also, gifts have been part of the tradition for a long time yet it would be interesting to discover where it all started. Today's activity is helpful in writing not only position/argumentative essays but research papers in general. Evidence is crucial in generating a solid paper and avoiding logical fallacy. Mastering the use of evidences is an essential in getting through the higher level English courses.

  2. Thesis statements can be easy but then hard. For a topic sentence I would want to talk about would be: A funny experience that I had during my Christmas break. Today's class was interesting, but the first activity was pretty confusing. It seemed like an easy assignment, but the fallacies could really confuse you. I think it's something that you would really need to think about. You may think that you have the right answer. Then you could be wrong, but it's okay(: Just try again.

  10. The link was a nice reminder of thesis statements and the controlling idea. A festive topic sentence I'd write would be: On Christmas, I want to give gifts to the people I love. Today's activity was interesting and the statements we read that would be inappropriate in an argumentative essay were absurd and I can see why it would be deemed unprofessional to use that type of writing. Some were so ridiculous that it was funny. Good job to everyone who answered the questions and thank you for the in class early birthday wishes guys!

  12. The first activity that I participated in made me confused. I had no idea, how to differentiate what goes with my sentence. The second activity made my mind open to other peoples perspective. Some people may agree that it should be up to the patient to decided whether she should live or not and some say that they should not because of religious views. I would like to find out how hectic it would be this year to host another Christmas party at my house since my dad won't be there to help set up.
