Today was a pretty fun day. The first thing we did was take a class photo. It took us a pretty long time to take the photo. It took about seven takes to get the final class photo. People did an air guitar performance in front of the whole calls. It was hilarious. We also learned about citing our work.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it was a lot of fun watching the air guitar performance. I think I speak for everyone when I say the whole calls was laughing. The calls photo was also hilarious.
DeleteI agree, it was a fun day! Other than the amount of times we had to retake the photo, everything else was very relaxed.
DeleteI wish i was there to see it. I got lost.
DeleteToday was cherry! We learned and did have fun, loving this class so far.
DeleteI agree that today was a fun day. It wasn't what I expected but I'm glad I was apart of it. I really enjoyed the air guitar performance!
DeleteIt was a fun day! I wish all my classes had the same hype as today's class.
DeleteThe air guitar performance was a great way to get the class going. I like it when instructor's are intuitive in their approach to teaching.
DeleteReflection for the day (08/28/14): I enjoyed the icebreaker of a taking a class BLOG photo, all of three times. Having several of the lovely gentlemen perform an air guitar exhibit intertwined a visual that coincided with “Listening to the Air” Guitar by Joseph Ponca. Today’s interaction created a warmth feeling of the class uniting as one.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't very fond of "Listening to the Air" Guitar, but it was a good day anyway
DeleteI agree that today's interaction in a way did create a warm environment. It helped me feel more comfortable. I can't wait to do more!
DeleteThe "air band" was hilarious. I usually don't like activities, but I guess that today was an exception.
DeleteI agree the air band was funny. I didn't think they would go up there and play the air.
DeleteThe story of “The Struggle of an all American Girl” was really interesting. When I read that, I was reminded of myself. I am Korean, Chamorro, and Chuukese, and yet I don’t feel complete with any of my cultural heritages. I have Korean grandparents at home, and it is hard for me to communicate with them because I can’t speak Korean fluently. Whenever my grandfather from Chuuk visits us, and he has a conversation with my family in Chuukese, I feel left out. I guess you can say that I can relate to the author a lot. I am also culturally lost.
ReplyDeleteNadine, that is totally awesome to be multicultural. I look forward to meeting you and working with you in this class. Maybe you can teach me a few things or two regarding cultural differences.
DeleteThat's really awesome that you're made up of different cultures! I feel the same way when my parents speak Chamorro to my other relatives. I just hope that you're able to find yourself with whatever culture you choose.
DeleteI agree, The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl was interesting. It's cool how you're Korean, Chamorro, and Chuukese.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteYour story is interesting. Do not worry, you are not the only one who is lost. Some people in a different cultures have the same situation.
DeleteI know how you feel. I am a quarter of 4 different ethnicity's and I feel left out from all 4. I've never really felt like I belong anywhere. But just know that in each of us exists a will to be unique, and to exist in our own right. Be you, and those that matter will see and accept "you." We all feel the need to belong, to be included, to be accepted, to be a part of something greater than ourselves. And often enough, we forget that we are all individuals, our own persons. Be you!
DeleteI found the essays we read in class to be very interesting. They really displayed the how the little experiences in life can have a longing impact on other people. While the essay “Listening to the Air” was uplifting in tone, “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl” was more melancholic as it was describing a struggle in Elizabeth Wong’s life. Also from reading these essays I learned how to cite sources within the essay itself. I’m looking forward to how skillful I’ll be in adding citations within essays.
ReplyDeleteI'm also trying to understand how to do citations properly
DeletePreviously I had to use citations but I didn't know how. Now I'm glad I get to learn how and apply it to my essays. I hope you can do the same as well :)
DeleteIn today's discussion, we read and talked about two essays. We learned how to cite our work in both text and in the works cited page. We also had a lot of fun today, we finished our group picture after several takes. We even had a funny air guitar performance to help our class bond together.
ReplyDeleteAfter taking in all of the knowledge that were given today, I forgot we took the photo.
DeleteIt was quite funny that you came in late and we all had to retake the picture. You the real MVP
DeleteIt took us a while to take a class photo. My favorite part would have to be the air guitar performance.
DeleteIt's always nice to relearn how to cite our sources properly so we can prevent plagiarism, and I definitely agree that today was a fun day.
DeleteI agree that today was fun with the many photos we took as well as the air guitar performance. I think that our class is starting to break out of our shells.
DeleteIt was actually fun doing that air guitar thing.
DeleteThe citing was pretty hard, but I got the hang of it.
DeleteWe had great air guitarists and interesting stories read. The most memorable was The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl by Elizabeth Wong. Many of us can relate to that story, as quite a few of us come from other countries. The story makes me think whether or not my children will know the many practices of my culture. I don’t even remember what the other story was about, but the day went well and I hope the group picture turns out fine.
ReplyDeleteThat’s my story.
I know what you mean. In the future, I want my kids to know where they came from rather than be culturally lost. I guess that means its just about identifying with their cultures when their young.
DeleteThat story can relate to many people. These days, a lot of people don't really care about their cultural heritage. I know I didn't, and I really regret that. People, including me, just worry too much about what will happen in the future.
DeleteI agree completely! If I were to choose between the two stories that I remembered the most, it would be "An All-American Girl" by Elizabeth Wong. I am a victim of lacking knowledge about my culture and it's pretty scary. I'm trying to learn slowly but surely.
DeleteToday’s activities consist of blogging, reading on how to cite your work, descriptive essays, and my favorite, the air band. We reviewed on how to cite our work in the (MLA) and (APA) form. When citing your work, you will have to note the author’s name (last, first), title of composition, edition, name of the anthology, editor(s), place of publication, publisher, date of publication, pages on which the selection appears, and medium of publication. We were reviewed on how to write a descriptive essay. We were given some topics to write on for the descriptive essay and some helpful steps on how to do it. The air band that played today was great. My favorite part during the air band was when the air drummer shouted “OH YEAH”. Overall, today was interesting.
ReplyDeleteWow reading this I think I just learned what I missed out today. You can become a great teacher. Thank you Senpai!
DeleteDude thanks for reminding me about this. It looks like I missed some points.
DeleteInteresting reflection Manwai Nguyen. And great summary, on key!
DeleteI agree, today was a lot of fun and your reflection was a great summary of what we did. My favorite part was the story about the Chinese girl wanting to become Americanized.
DeleteUpon entering this classroom, I was expecting to have fun in this class. As it turns out, we did! First of all, I enjoyed taking several class pictures with my classmates. It was pretty hilarious when Chanel took so many photographs of us. Secondly, several people played a little "air band". We had 3 people on the air guitar, and one on the air drums. We all shared a laugh as they played so awkwardly at the front of the room. Lastly, I enjoyed reading and learning new things such as the citation. I'm looking forward to this class every Tuesdays and Thursdays!
ReplyDeleteToday was really fun indeed. Hope we can bond more as a class everyday.
DeleteI agree, today was a really fun day. I'm looking forward for more days like this.
DeleteI agree, nobody does not like a boring class.
DeleteI agree, today was a fun day.
DeleteIn today’s class, we learned about citations and descriptive essays. We learned about plagiarism and how it is an automatic fail if you are caught. The most entertaining part of the day, was when we took our class picture. It was hilarious when we had to do multiple takes because of people showing up late or just taking bad pictures. In conclusion, today was a memorable day!
ReplyDeleteI agree, really entertaining when we had to take multiple pictures, but people are still missing in the photo. Also the air guitar was pretty funny as well because they were just strumming with no sounds.
DeleteI bet I can play a better air guitar than you!
DeleteIt's a very good thing she told us about that. I'm sure some people would've tried to plagiarize.
DeleteYes that's right. Plagiarism is forbidden in the University.
DeleteThe photo was funny because of all the re-takes we had to take for the photo.
DeleteToday's activity was pretty interesting. We read the story about a Chinese girl wanting to become "Americanized". It got me thinking and I learn from this that no matter how much you want something you have to think about the consequences. In the story the Chinese girl gained the traits and culture of the USA, but not knowing that she also lost something, her Chinese culture. It just comes to prove that no matter how much you change always keep hold of the things that will be forever, not only things that please you for the moment.
ReplyDeleteFrom my experience as a Chinese man that was born and raised in a foreign land, I learned that I should be proud of what I am. So I agree with you.
DeleteUnbelievable dude, you came in so late. But hey you made it fun for us! You should play some songs for the class one day.
DeleteThat is pretty true. When you take a risk, be prepared for the consequences.
DeleteIt's too late, but I have definitely learned my lesson. I regret losing all the cultural practices from when I was little. Reading that story makes me rethink about the decisions I've made.
DeleteI agree.
DeleteMy thought on today’s lesson is that it was interesting because we not only read out loud to the class but we also had a group discussion on the topics that we did today. While reading through the texts we did citations. After reading the texts we answered a few questions that helped me to better understand what the writer was trying to say. We also discussed more about our first essay which is a descriptive essay. I’m excited to start my first essay so it can help me better myself as a writer and allow me to be more open minded.
ReplyDeleteI too am excited to start my first essay. Hopefully this class will better my understanding and view on the proper form of English writing.
DeleteI appreciate your thoroughness.
DeleteToday’s activities for this English class, was very fun. The air guitar concert in the beginning of class was hysterical. I was able to record it and soon later upload it to the class website. I didn't really know anything about citations and work cited stuff. We being able to review about it had helped me understand a little more about it and its ways. To the end of class we discussed about how to write a descriptive essay, it knocked my socks my off. I actually figured out how to finally do one correctly or I think I do. Overall this class day was cherry.
ReplyDeleteI agree, today's activities are pretty t'serry.
DeleteCherry like Auntie Mary!
DeleteSame here! I finally figured out how to do an descriptive essay and at the same time I figured out what I might want to write about!
DeleteI don't know much about citations either, so the review helped me out.
DeleteI agree, my socks were almost knocked off as well. I never knew I was writing my descriptive essays so wrong. Learning is t'serry.
DeleteThe air guitar war really entertaining. I couldn't stop laughing.
DeleteI gotta see this recording of that air guitar session.
DeleteReflection: Today’s learning was about citing work and to not do plagiarism because that can cost you to fail the class and will not be tolerated. The air guitar was pretty funny because I didn’t know that they would actually go up there and really play the air guitar. The story about the all American girl was pretty sad because she didn’t want to learn her heritage and wanted to be an American instead. Overall today was a good day of learning and laughter.
ReplyDeleteI agree the air guitar was fun! Did you make a gmail account? It sucks having to make a gmail account cause used to hotmail.
DeleteToday was a great enjoyable experience. We started off this class by being in a different room. We were in the computer lab today to conduct class and as soon as I walked in, I knew that the class was going to be different. The first thing we did was take a class photo and well it was fun and kind of hilarious because we had to take the photo like six times. Later on before we read example essays me and a couple of my classmates had to go and show what it means to air guitar. It was something of an icebreaker and I enjoyed it. Later on we read another example essay and it was enjoyable and kind of sad at the same time. Overall today’s class was enjoyable and hopefully we can do this again sometimes.
ReplyDeleteYou were an awesome "air-drummer"! You seem to have really enjoyed yourself! Hopefully your band can perform once more during our fiesta!
DeleteThe class was different, but I really liked the lesson. We need to get the band back together for another gig!
DeleteI agree, today had a lot of activities to break out of our shells. You did great at the performance! Oh yeah
DeleteWe had an interesting class today. The air guitar performance was entertaining. I actually thought that an air guitar was an actual instrument. Silly me. Although we kept having to retake our class picture, I had a great day. Our topic of discussion was mainly on text-based reading today. Had a great time!
ReplyDeleteI too had a great time!
DeleteSame here man, today was interesting and I did have fun with the "class pictures" and the performance.
DeleteI thought too that the air guitar was a real instrument.
DeleteToday’s air guitar performance was very interesting. It was a good ice breaker to have with the silence in the classroom. As we read “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl” by Elizabeth Wong, I couldn’t help but apply myself into the situation. The photo shoot was amusing, despite the amount of retakes. Hopefully we took at least one satisfying photo. We were still able to learn many things such as citations, definition of a descriptive essay, and a little bit of Chinese.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the air guitar performance was hilarious.
DeleteThat's the phrase I was looking for, "ice breaker." Yes, the air guitar performance was indeed a good ice beaker!
DeleteWe took too many photos. We have to have at least one good one!
DeleteThe class today was very interesting. We started off by taking a class picture and failed to have all students in the photo multiple times. Then, some other students and I performed live with our air guitars and air drums. I also performed an amazing solo where i destroy my guitar. Overall, the class was very enjoyable and fun and I no longer dread Tuesdays and Thursdays.
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job playing the air guitar man. Haha. It was a pretty fun day for us all! Hopefully it is the first of many!
DeleteYou did great as a 'air-guitarist'! Your solo was wicked, especially seeing how you ended up breaking your instrument due to rocking out too hard. I have confidence that your band will go far! And yes, I totally agree that Tuesdays and Thursdays won't be such a drag after all.
DeleteToday in our EN100 class, we did some pretty fun things. We took pictures together, but then we had to take a lot because some people kept coming in after we’ve already taken so many pictures. We then got asked by Dr. Rivera who has ever played the air-guitar and unfortunately, I, and three other people who raised their hands, were called up to the front to go play the air-guitar to demonstrate to my classmates how it’s done. We then reviewed and read up on one of the four major essays we needed to work on, and turn in before October 10.
ReplyDeleteI thought the amount of times we had to retake our class picture was hilarious. It was a good day!
DeleteThe things that we did today were fun especially the many takes we took with the class and the air guitar performance. You guys did a good job with the performance though.
DeleteI had this feeling that Dr. Rivera would call up people to perform so I refrained myself from raising my hand! But nonetheless, you four did great! It was hilariously interesting to watch.
DeleteToday, started with a class photo which was taken like five times. We also talked about citations, a few readings, and a descriptive essay. There was also an air guitar performance which was funny. Today was fun with the class photo, the performance, and the things we read and talked about.
ReplyDeleteI thought the air-guitar performance was funny too! Especially since I was in it.
DeleteI also thought that the air guitar performance was hilarious and quite entertaining. It was an overall good day.
DeleteToday's class was very informal and entertaining. I would definitely say I learned a lot. We started the day off by taking a class picture. Then, we started reading two stories that were very interesting to me. I learned how important it is to cite your sources. I definitely would say that this is a very useful class. I hope to end the semester with a better understanding and view of the English language. This class will help me out in the future.
ReplyDeleteToday's class was very entertaining and informing. Citing down my sources is one thing that I need to do.
DeleteThe stories that were read were very interesting. Also, I learned what citations are and how to use it in essays.
DeleteI also think this is a very useful class. Hopefully we'll have more fun classes like today.
DeleteI agree that this class will us out in the future.
DeleteIt was a sad story about "the struggle to be an all-American girl." Everyone experience struggle in life. When I was a kid, I was having a hard time speaking in my second language. Some people laughed at me because of my different accent. Another activity that I learned today is about descriptive essay. I learned many things about descriptive essay than last year.
ReplyDeleteAmen Camelle. That's the beauty of life though. There's happiness on one side and happiness on another.
DeleteToday started off interesting with taking millions of group pictures and watching a few classmates play the air guitars/drums. We read as a class learning that plagiarism can affect our grade, the proper ways to cite our sources as well as a bibliography of a person's culture. I’ve learned to enhance my culture and to share and enjoy what I have learned than to be what I’m not.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to learn the lesson from what "The stuggle to be an all-American girl". It can really make you reflect on your culture.
DeleteToday in class we practiced on freewriting and some people had to share their freewriting works. I made mine about an event important in my youth. I chose to make it more about the company that makes the movies than the movies themselves. I was talking about how growing up is the coolest thing when you’re still a kid, but then you start to feel different about growing up when… You’re actually growing up. I thought when Shippy shared his freewriting work with us was something really cool because I knew what he was talking about. I’m a big time Doctor Who fan as well. That’s pretty much it for today so hopefully next time we’ll have more fun just like today.
