Throughout high school i learned that when you are writing that it should look similar to the final paper. Today i learned a different approach to writing. Today i began to free write. it felt so good to keep jotting down ideas on paper. Jotting ideas was fun but to see how the paper flowed was more enticing to keep going. Before this lesson i hated the fact of writing paper. With the first step of the writing process learned, i figured that it will be much easier when writing my essay.
ReplyDeleteSame here! I like how we can just write all the ideas that we have. :-)
DeleteFree writing is fun but with an interesting topic. What topic did you write about that made you flow your thoughts on paper?
DeleteWhen i write papers, I usually just write it as a final paper, and just edit my grammatical errors, so this is a new approach to writing. writing papers aren't always fun, but they are easy to write when you actually know what you are talking about.
DeleteI know. It felt so restricitng in high school actually. It felt like restricted brainstorming to me. But Im happy learning a whole new, different, and better way to write a essay.
DeleteI totally agree with you Dan. I have the same thought process when writing papers. We did go to the same High school so i know how you feel.
DeleteFree writing is definitely the best way to go if you want to come out with a great paper! Continue to free write because it will be the success to stress free papers.
DeleteI totally agree with you! This first stage of writing has made me realize that writing can be fun!
DeleteHey, you know what I think you're on to something. Writing probably isn't that hard to do, when using the free writing technique.
DeleteToday’s activity was pretty interesting. I like how freewriting makes you write all the ideas you have for a particular topic. Sometimes you get sidetracked, but you bounce back on the topic. I thought the peer shared information today was pretty interesting. It’s pretty cool how you can talk about something without thinking about grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like you were really interested in your topic that you were writing about. You should have shared what you wrote :D
DeleteI too like how you don't have to pay attention to sentence structure because you are just trying to get your ideas onto your paper. When we make use of underlining & annotating, it helps us narrow down our ideas.
DeleteNot having to worry about grammar, spelling and punctuation is definitely the perks of free writing! Very true that free writing allows you to bounce back after being sidetrack.
DeleteYou will often get sidetracked if you are not into the topic you are writing about. I find it easier at that point to go outside and take a break. But do not use your phone or anything else. Just relax your mind and when you feel ready head back and continue.
DeleteToday was just a review of the writing strategies, specifically stage 1 which is free writing. We went over underlining & annotating our work. Free writing is a useful tool to get our ideas flowing and break writers block. Going through all the stages of writing will take some time, but the final product will show how it helped turning ideas into a finished paper. I have yet to use these writing strategies, so I am hoping it helps improve my essays.
ReplyDeleteFree writing is a useful tool in writing any paper. A small idea can burst into the best paper you will ever write. I am still shocked at the amount of important ideas I wrote down during the free writing exercise.
DeleteThis type of technique is very helpful. I, also, usually just write my papers to the final product and turn it in, but it takes a while for me to write the papers because lack of ideas. Now, i will try this technique from now on to help me.
DeleteToday’s activities include an orientation on MyReadingLab and learning the first step of writing which is free writing. I’m disappointed that we have to spend money just to be graded on MyReadingLab, but I mean it is college so it’s whatever. During the free writing part, it was difficult to write because none of the topics interested me. It is true that your writing does minimize and you actually have to think more on what to write when the topic does not interest you. I basically only wrote a paragraph given the time we had to write. I would personally say it felt like a slow day or maybe that’s just me considering the amount of sleep I had which was not enough.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Zhyerra. I think you should have picked a topic that interested you so that you didn't have to edit. And yeah, it sucks how we have to spend money, but hey its college :-)
DeleteTotally agree with having to spend money :( but this is an investment to our future. What you had so far on your free writing was definitely a great start into an awesome essay!
Delete#thestruggleisreal College fees can be a major pain in the buttocks, Rheanna is right though, it is the investment of our future. No worries, freewriting should be about you, and nobody else :)
DeleteI agree with you there, Zhyerra, about spending money to be graded on MyReadingLab because there are other expenses when it comes to college. I think it is understandable why you only had a paragraph because it takes some time to think of what to write even with the topics given.
DeleteToday’s class was very chill. First, we had an orientation on MyReadingLab. I think it’s cool that it consists of exercises and such, but that means we have to buy the access code for about $45. We also went over “free writing” and covered a little more on annotating. I always thought that free writing was wasting my time, but when I actually had to free write because I needed to present, it was really helpful and it would've made writing easier if I was to further my essay. At the end of the class, it was another informative day =)
ReplyDeleteThought I was done with buying books till i heard about the 45 dollar access code we needed to purchase but yes, it was another informative day.
DeleteWoohoo! Someone agrees on me about buying the access code. Haha. But it is college so we cannot do much about it. I have come to realize that actually spending money on learning will motivate us to do better because we do not want to waste the money that was spent. Hopefully, it furthers our education one way or another.
DeleteThe myreadinglab orientation was very easy to understand but like you said we have to buy it and that sucks. Today was an easy, informative class.
DeleteYeah, I thought the beginning of class was chill as well.
DeleteI totally agree with Zhyerra. Spending our money on educational things will motivate us to learn and hopefully, we all will succeed. I also liked your presentation on free writing. I too have also went through the same experience so it was funny and cool that someone felt the same way about stuff like that. It brought back memories of me having to wait in the long lines to pay the power and water bill. Haha xD
DeleteThe free writing activity really helped me with my writing today. It gave me an idea on how I should start most of my essays and research papers. I usually have a hard time on getting started with my papers. Now that I have learned steps on how to use the free writing skill I can now put it to good use. Hopefully I will become a better writer so my mom won’t be so hard on me when she proofreads my work. I can now be someone who actually makes sense when they write.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I had troubles starting an essay and I think that now it'll be much easier. :-)
DeleteAgreed. This free writing stage makes writing an essay way lot easier from how I use to write before.
DeleteSame here with free writing helping me with getting started on my essay. It was very helpful and I never really took the time to consider it. Other than that, I will now use free writing as a start to any type of essay!
DeleteHAHA, I like that! "I can now be someone who actually makes sense when they write." You'll be a great writer as you allow your personality to shine through your writing. :D
DeleteI felt the exact same way but when my older sister reads my papers because she's an English major. Sometimes I feel intimidated by her when she proofreads my paper but now I can be a little more confident with all the new things I am learning in class!
DeleteToday’s activities had a good understanding. I feel that free writing is one of my favorite exercises because I like to discuss topics or write about personal experiences on paper, and I feel that it’s a way for a person to have that artistic expression. Everyone should always feel free to write about anything, because what they write is a representation of themselves. And being yourself is the best thing to be.
ReplyDeleteIt's my favorite exercise as well. I feel I will be using it all the time before I start on my papers.
DeleteI agree with you about today's activities. Freewriting is definitely my favorite too :)
DeleteI agree with you about everyone feeling free to write about anything. I think that it is the easiest way of writing because you are writing from experience; not much research has to be done when writing based on experience.
DeleteToday’s class was really great. I honestly don’t remember much about the writing process but I liked how we went over it in today’s class because I think it’ll be a big help in writing my essays. And I also liked the freewriting, even though I found it hard to figure out what to write about at first. But once I got into it, I wanted to write some more but time was up. I’m not a big fan with sharing my work out loud to the class so that was very nerve-wracking for me, but I’m happy that I got it over with.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I like how you were practically yelling while you read ;-) Interesting to hear about your prom night :-)
DeleteIt's okay because I do not remember much about the writing process either so you are not alone my friend. I'm glad we went over it in class so that we can refresh our memory.
DeleteI also never thought that I would jot down so many ideas just from free writing. I have this mentality to write my papers perfectly the first time and this technique changed that.
DeleteI, also, didn't remember much when it came to free writing being apart of the writing process.
DeleteNo one is ever a fan of sharing their work, but I think it is a good practice for us to get out of our comfort zone. It is normal to feel nervous before a presentation, but the best part about it is that feeling of accomplishment afterwards. I loved your topic for your freewriting. When I heard what you wrote about, I had a flashback moment. It was very interesting and refreshing to hear. Prom was great!
DeleteToday, we had a helper from the writing gym come in and explain to us how to set up our myreadinglab. She explained the process well enough for me to understand it if I did not already know what to do. We also reviewed free writing and did a little activity about it. Some students shared their thoughts on certain topics and it was interesting, but luckily, I did not have to share mine. I realized we are going to have to share our writings a lot in this class and I do not think I am prepared for that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the MyReadingLab Orientation. She explained the steps thoroughly and now I have an idea on how to set it up if I get stuck with something while signing up. Oh, and the steps are also listed on our class website if you need extra help.
DeleteWow.. I am also not prepared to read and share my writings to the class. Hopefully, we will be prepared and comfortable with sharing our writings as the semester goes by.
DeleteI was glad that someone came to brief us about MyReadingLab. My first plan was just to wing it when it comes to registering. Thank goodness someone came to help. Now, I know what to do when I register. I felt the same way when our fellow colleagues were designated to share. Yes, luckily, I did not also have to share mine, but the time will come when we have to share our writings in class.
DeleteIn today's class activity I learned about free writing. This type of style helped me realize ways of writing a more well-constructed paper. Usually, it takes a long thought process for me to start writing a paper about a topic I generally have no interest in. But, I will be practicing this technique to see if it actually helps. Also, the presentation in the beginning of class was really helpful. Now I know the steps to accomplish in order to take to pass this class. All in all, today was enjoying.
ReplyDeleteI have to get used to free writing because i didn't have to make use of it in high school. Now that we are in college, i think we should make use of all the tools we are learning to help improve our writing ability.
DeleteExactly! I find it hard to write about something that doesn't spark something in my heart and mind. It usually results in my "writer's block syndrome" and inability to focus. I find the technique we learned today insanely useful and see if it works for me as well! :D I wish us both luck!
DeleteToday was a successful class. For the first time I felt like what it was like to be an attentive student. If i keep this up my grades should stay in the green zone.
DeleteAt times, I can be a procrastinator at best. My ideas don’t always flow correctly and I tend to over think them, resulting in my solution of “putting it off till later”. Just yesterday, I had writer’s block. I had so many ideas going in and out of head that I didn’t know what to specifically write about. Today’s free-writing exercise gave me hope. Who knew writing your all-over the place thoughts down on paper could become your very own savior. I learned today that it allows you to unleash the imagination in your head and dissect what’s meant to be focused on later. Free writing to me is like finding a diamond in the rough. Yeah, it may seem like all you wrote down was hooplah, but somewhere in the chicken scratch is a masterpiece topic waiting to be found within. Woohoo - Thank you free-writing! (:
ReplyDeleteToday's class helped me too considering I'm at my best when I'm procrastinating!
DeleteI am the same exact way! I am an over thinker and a procrastinator, which is very bad. I too also do the same thing, "putting it off till later." Hopefully we will improve by using the strategies we are learning, like in today's class.
DeleteAlthough we only went over the reading lab and free writing strategies, I just enjoy how vibrant this class is. I found the idea of having a reading lab very interesting considering it’s a new experience. I’ve never done anything like that on the computer for any class before. I free write so often that I have so many note books full of experiences and poems, so I took joy in today’s activity. I like the idea of people sharing what they wrote during the free writing activity. It helped me get to know them despite the fact it was very brief. It catches my attention when people just speak what’s on their mind on certain things. I hope I’m brave enough to share when my time comes around this semester.
ReplyDeleteI love coming to this class because of the people who are in it. Dr. Rivera is awesome with the way she teaches us how to use certain skills at certain times. I love this class and how informative it is.
DeleteI'm so excited to hear about your note books full of experiences and poems if you end up sharing them to class! I used to be in poetry club and poetry in my eyes is the greatest form of free writing because its a glimpse of a person's thoughts, ideas, and values. You'll do great, be brave!
DeleteFor today’s activities, we read and discussed about the first stage of the writing process, which involves exploring, experimenting and gathering information. We also learned about Freewriting. I greatly enjoyed learning more about freewriting because it is the type of writing I do most often. At first, I didn’t know that there was name for writing what is on one’s mind and writing it continuously. I think learning more about the writing process and freewriting will enhance my writing skills. I also thought that today’s reading about freewriting is nice because I now know more about it than I previously did. I also found it interesting what my colleagues wrote about in their freewriting topic. Overall, I enjoyed what we learned about in today’s class.
ReplyDeleteI also hope for the writing process to also enhance my writing skills. It was fun listening to our classmates read their freewriting assignments.
DeleteAgreed. I feel that freewriting is a way for a writer to explore better ideas and it also helps organize all the thoughts that you had in mind.
DeleteRight, free writing is a special skill that can be improved in our writing.
DeleteToday’s lesson was very informative as always. I've reviewed and learned more about the first stage of the writing process. The first stage includes exploring, experimenting, and gathering information. Moreover, as we progressed further into our lesson today, we came across free writing. I first learned about free writing back in middle school, and it followed through my high school years, and now college. It’s the easiest way to express yourself and allows you to write with no boundaries, also I enjoy free writing because teachers can’t grade you on grammar, spelling, etc. Overall, today was a good day!
ReplyDeleteUgh, My Reading Lab, I hate that we have to pay to use My Reading Lab. If it wasn’t 10 per cent of our grade I wouldn’t even touch it, because it’s just one more thing to worry about. The free writing part was fun. We don’t have to be grammatically correct so our thoughts could come out more easily. We could just put pen to paper and create a masterpiece of thoughts.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I felt the same way about the reading lab when she said it was 10% but then again, I also thought of it as a new experience and sometimes new experiences are good.
DeleteI personally agree with you about the reading lab, haha!
DeleteHonestly, I can totally agree with you about the reading lab. I mean money doesn't just fall out of the sky or anything. I mean bad enough everything is expensive including college but overall I loved how we can get a lot of help on it.
DeleteToday’s activities were very fun. We went over stage one of the writing process. This stage involves exploring, experimenting, and gathering information. During the writing process, it is important to go through this stage because it helps the writer begin his/her writing. One strategy that we read about was freewriting which is also extremely helpful because it allows the mind to run wild. Being able to have our first freewriting in class was exciting and felt amazing to experience. Personally, I felt that my mind could think about anything and I would write about it all. I feel like I have developed a skill that could be very useful to me in the near and distant future.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed hearing those who presented their freewriting in class. One person talked about dancing, another talked about prom, and the last person talked about social media. Their words made me think about things in my life that I went through and experienced.
I enjoyed when other's were sharing also!
DeleteI agree today was inspiring and enjoying.
DeleteI enjoyed today's activity as well:)
DeleteToday we learned another way of writing which is Freewriting. I would say I would rather free write than have a topic given to me. It seems pretty easier when you just write whatever you choose to write about. To me is also a fun and cool way of having more ideas. Sometimes you may make a mistake because you might have jumped to another subject but that’s okay because you can revise it later! Overall, I loved the lesson today.
ReplyDeleteA lot of easier if we set up the free writing as the first part of the writing.
DeleteI went off topic too. xD However, it is okay. We could always make correction to it later when we freewrite. I also agree with you on that, "I would rather free write than have a topic given to me.”
DeleteI really enjoyed today’s class because free writing is something I enjoy doing not only for school but also on my free time. For me, writing is a way to let all my thoughts flow onto paper. My favorite thing about free writing is that it doesn’t necessarily have to make sense; it’s a stream of my consciousness. At one point writing was something I wanted to pursue but I always thought my pieces were never good enough. I enjoy reading other writer’s works because in a sense I can get to know the writer on a deeper level without even knowing them personally. Free writing exposes and reveals experience, which I find inspiring for me and for my own work.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you that writing is something we wanted to pursue but we always thought our paper were never good enough as others. However, trust and let's be confident of ourselves, i am pretty sure that we will be a lot of better through studying in this course.
DeleteFree writing is like a therapist. It will not penalize you for grammatical errors, or scattered ideas. It allows you to realize where you ideas are and how to organize them. Free writing is there to guide you in the right direction,
DeleteI have been doing the free writing activity since last semester. Free writing is a really helpful and useful tool in our writing. Through the writing, we can write any thoughts or ideas that are related to the topic, and it does not need to be very organized and cleared. Basically just keep jotting down what you are thinking. The funny part I like was we could use “Blah blah blah” while in writing. Anyway, I am still having a hard time in writing, but hopefully through out this semester, my English writing will be improved as I expected.
ReplyDeleteI found that "Blah blah blah" part to be funny and interesting too! I hope my english writing assignments will improve while the semester goes by, as well.
DeleteToday, we went over some strategies of writing an essay. One is free writing. I liked this lesson because you could totally jot down whatever comes to your mind. You do not need to make revisions or correct anything yet because you are just writing down your thoughts and ideas. For the exercise, my essay was a bit off topic. I guess it’s okay because this exercise allows you to brainstorm so you could see your options and make corrections to it. To me, today’s lesson went by fast. I’m glad that we do exercises like this because even though it’s a basic essay, it still helps us with writing better essays and using effective strategies.
ReplyDeleteI loved it too because we wrote about whatever we wanted. What I mostly loved about it was when we got to share because it felt like we got to know more about our classmates. I really like learning more things & this class really teaches us a lot more to essays than I thought there was!
Delete
