I'm sure we all agree it was nice to brush up on improving our ways to write a better essay. Not saying that we do not know how to write a great essay, but it is nice to be reminded on efficient ways to help us brainstorm. I learned that I could make my essays more organized than they were before, like people say you learn something new everyday.

DeleteI agree that we could all use some work with our writing techniques and I look forward to seeing us all grow as effective writers.
Deleteit was very nice to brush up on things, especially learning the use of essays. I am glad to be learning more and useful things to write our essays
DeleteThat is a great point Taylor, although we all have awesome writing skills it doesn't hurt to give room for improvement. I also agree that everyday is a new learning day and taking full advantages of that will be a wise choice.
DeleteI strongly agree with you Taylor. Just like a professional could be so great at something, They would still have to keep finding ways to be better at what they do and to brush up on some skills they might have missed.
DeleteI was particularly compelled with the discussion about “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl”. I felt that I could relate to the narrator because I, myself, have had difficulties with connecting to my ethnic roots. Growing up in a United States territory has made my life revolve around all things of Western Culture. My parents both immigrated from the Philippines and have tried to teach my siblings and I about the Filipino culture; however, all my years in the school system on Guam has taught me more about American ideas and in that way I feel I relate to Elizabeth Wong.
ReplyDeleteDidree it is never too late to learn about your culture, it is up to you to seek an interest in your ethnic background. As a chamorro and I do not speak my language I feel some guilt, but it is a dying language and I am disheartened to hear that frequently.
DeleteDidree, we practically have the same situation. We both relate to the author because we've adapted to the way we were raised here on Guam, but we still want to learn about our ethnic background.
DeleteToday’s class involved various activities. We expanded our knowledge on how to properly cite our work, both in the text and on the work(s) cited page. We read two examples of essays with citations to get us used to how proper citations should look. I thought it was an exciting idea to start off one of the readings with an “air-instrument” show. I look forward to more “air-band” shows throughout the semester. We also went over the guidelines we should follow when writing our descriptive essay. I am positive that we will all be able to successfully write our first major essay when the time comes.
ReplyDelete-Bart
I agree we should have more band shows, as it opens up our creative side and may help us in our writings by becoming more comfortable with our classmates.
DeleteI enjoyed the "air-instrument" show very much. You all did phenomenal in my opinion. You are a talented air tambourine player. The show made the atmosphere of the class very fun and helped me stay awake.

DeleteThe "air instrument" show was extremely fun to watch. I believe that through these fun activities, we will be more engaged in class and will enjoy learning.
DeleteIn the discussion today, I was more winded by “The Struggle to be an All-American Girl”. By reading the selection, it gave me ideas to what I should do with my children in the future about our cultural language. It taught me that if I wanted to do something I should not hold back into not doing it. Also, I learned about more of the descriptive essay and how to be organized with it. it gave me a more descriptive information about what the essays about, how to write the essay, and etc.
ReplyDelete-Christian
I agree because i believe if you don't teach their language who will? Also they may feel like you have neglected them on their own right to their culture.
DeleteI think it's amazing that you're taking an essay that we've just read today and applying to your future endeavors.
DeleteToday was pretty fun, from taking the class picture to the air band. The class picture took a couple of takes but we finally got it, which was good. The air band was really funny. I look forward to watching other air bands perform in this class. We also touched up on citing our work which was very helpful.
ReplyDeleteI agree that today's class was fun and resourceful. I think we should expand the air bands and have a big Rock Band towards the end of the semester.
DeleteTouching up was very helpful, I agree Kyle!
Deletei agree it was pretty fun. i enjoyed your air band and your singing. it was an amazing concert!
DeleteThe air band was a pleasant surprise!
DeleteI was fun Kyle, the touch up on citing will defiantly help with our grades.
DeleteThe air bands performance was very fascinating! Discussing about citing our work was helpful and will be useful when we start our essays.
DeleteYeah I agree on the air drum. It was pretty funny!
DeleteThe essay on The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl was about a girl, Elizabeth Wong. She is a Chinese girl who was westernized, but was physically around her culture. It’s a sad fact that she felt multicultural and preferred other cultures than her own. Her schooling was a major influence on her and the person she became.
ReplyDeleteI also think it is unfortunate that she grew up preferring other cultures over her own. However, I see where she was coming from since she had multiple outside influences.
DeleteI feel like many of us can relate to this particular reading and I very much agree that her schooling was a major influence to her westernization.
DeleteI was surprised as i walked into the class by a class photo. Aside from the reading all the citing notes was very helpful for the essay. i thought the story about the Chinese girl losing her Chinese heritage was interesting because i also can relate to it. The unexpected band was pretty interesting, can't wait to see the other performances!
ReplyDeleteYou should be the singer for our next performance, while they play their air guitar and drums.
DeleteDaryl it is sad about the girl losing her Chinese heritage, hopefully many can relate and actually learn from her regret and struggles.
DeleteWhen our EN100 class was reading “The Struggle to Be an All-American girl,” by Elizabeth Wong, I can relate to the author. I’m a girl from Chuuk who came to Guam. I've also accustomed to the western culture which is why I don’t really know my culture or language. I can only understand my language, but I can never really speak it. I’m now taking History of Micronesia to be more familiar with my ethnic background.
ReplyDeleteI understand your struggle, although my situation is opposite. I'm from Guam and myself as well don't know my language. Which takes a toll on me and my belief's and culture.
DeleteWe're in the same boat but only from different parts of the world. I find it very interesting that a vast majority of us can relate to this particular essay.
DeleteToday was a very interesting class session with my fellow colleagues. I have realized that playing the air drums would be significantly awkward without any real music. In addition Bartola has awesome air tambourine skills. On the other hand my friend Kyle did a great job laughing. Sadly, Mike didn't join in and display his crazy dance moves I hope all of my fellow colleagues of EN100-13 enjoyed the show. - Jp
ReplyDeleteThank you for the compliment! Your drumming skills were exceptional. I look forward to future gigs.
DeleteThe concert you guys put on was pretty funny Drums air drums were pretty on point.
Deleteyour drumming was amazing. your air band rocked and was very interesting!
DeleteYou guys did great, can't wait to see more of that. The dance kinda threw me off ,but still entertaining
DeleteIt was very interesting indeed. It was great watching you guys perform. I'm sure that you and the band's performance made everyone's day.
DeleteGreat job on your performance. Your band was incredible and amusing, hope to see you guys perform again!
DeleteGood job on your performance! It was really funny! It made my day!

ReplyDeleteToday lesson, we read about The struggle to be an All-American Girl by Elizabeth Wong. In this story, the American girl went to a Chinese school on Yale Street with her brother that she used to go with. Her mother wanted her children to learn how to speak and learn the culture of Chinese language. She did not like the Chinese culture and she thinks the Chinese language was embarrassing. Every time someone speaks to her in Chinese, she would just smile and walk away without any sound. In my opinion, you do not have to learn the language if you are not interested in. It is better if you stick with what you know, to save yourself from embarrassment.
ReplyDeleteKlarissa, your insight on the details of class reading are very interesting.
DeleteWow thank you! you are so nice (:
DeleteI really enjoyed the topic we read today. The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl. She was being forced to go to Chinese school by her parents, which she disliked very much. She couldn't express her true self because Chinese School forced them learn proper politeness. Her mother forced them to go to Chinese school, but she was embarrassed by it. In my opinion, I think we shouldn't be forced to do something we don't wanna do. Its a free country, it's free to speak up about what we want to do and what we don't want to do right?
ReplyDeleteTotally agree Anne we were all given life and we live it as we please, and sometimes parents take too much control and restrict us from certain things and that is where the line is drawn; and is up to us to talk to them to give them a better understanding.
DeleteI agree as well, Freedom of Speech! Everyone has a choice in what they want to do, and no one should get in the way of that.
DeleteI agree to learn what you want to learn you should not be forced into something.
DeleteBeing late to class is embarrassing, When everybody stares at me and i look confused
ReplyDeletebecause i was lost on the topic subject. I really liked the review on the descriptive essay, it gave me more ideas on how to execute my writing skills. It"s a new type of style for me with the class participation on the reading, I guess i got to learn how to adjust to Dr. Riveras class.
I understand that feel because i was also late and felt a little out of place. I feel the description essay review was very helpful especially since i'm not so great on essays.
Deleteit is okay Dustin, you have classmates to help you in need. you have nothing to be embarrassed about. there are others who come to late to class everyday in other classes. i agree about reviewing the essays, it gave me more and more ideas into making an essay and to prepare to write one.
DeleteI most definitely can relate to that, being late isn't so much fun especially when the whole class and teacher stops just to assist you. But at least you came, better late than never! Hang in there and I hope you obtain much information in this class that you want and need.
DeleteIn today’s lesson I learned how to make your essays more neat and more of a structured essay. It was a good thing we went over these kinds of topic because it showed me on the flaws that I make in writing an essay. Me, myself I surely need to work on that and it helped me a lot. Now I can correct my mistakes and make it better and more accurate.
ReplyDeleteI need a lot of work with my writing skills too. I hope that at the end of the semester, we both leave class with the writing skills that we were lacking in the beginning.

DeleteAlthough I'm not as excited for our future essays, i am glad we went over minor tips.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteWe all make mistakes but these are mistakes that can be corrected. I believe that by the end of this semester, with the help of these lessons that we go over every class, we will be more efficient writers.
DeleteToday’s lesson was pretty interesting, we learned about citations and the different types of essays we are going to be writing. The essay that I am looking forward to writing would be the descriptive essay because it seems like the easiest to write. I thought it was really funny when our classmates put on a concert. They sounded pretty good. Also I liked that our class took a class photo. Even if it took it like 3 or 4 times to get a good photo.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed reviewing the citations and about the different types of essays there are. I always felt that descriptive essay was the easiest to write as well.
DeleteWow, what an amazing first day to be apart of the EN100 family. Although I came in a bit late I was welcomed with open arms by my fellow classmates but most especially Dr. Rivera. As I walked in very shy and anxious to know what this class was going to be based about I was able to witness how Dr.Rivera allowed everyone to fully participate with the class allowing us to be comfortable with one another but mainly by helping us learn as a team. Today, I was able to obtain how to appropriately write, set up and understanding the many different forms of a paragraph and essay which I never knew about or even heard of. I was able to grasp many writing reactions from different people that made me get an idea of how an essay or a paragraph should be. In closing, I look forward to be working with you the students and Dr.Rivera in giving me the opportunity to make myself more proficient when it comes to anything that requires around English and language.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I just wanted to say Welcome to the EN100-13 familia. I agree that Dr. Rivera did a great job trying to make us comfortable with one another and allowing us to have a voice in our class. I can’t wait for the many activities to come to help us become aquatinted with our classmates.
DeleteToday’s class was a lot of fun. We started the class by taking a group photo and had an “air band” perform for us. We went over the topic of citation and read some examples of how to cite properly. WE read essays such as “Sexist Men as Victims”(Malone), which emphasizes an issue on how some men view women as sexual objects and “The Struggle to Be an All American Girl.”(Ponca), an autobiography of a girl who is conflicted between her culture and the society the she lives in. We also had a review on descriptive essay, the first essay that we’ll be doing. We discussed what a descriptive essay is and a variety of topics that we can select from.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading “Sexist Men as Victims” by Malone, I came to a realization that in this day and age that we live in, MEN do view women as sexual objects and hopefully in our descriptive essay we can embellish on how it is a big problem that we face today in our generation.
DeleteDuring today’s lesson, I definitely thought it was great reviewing these different types of essays. As we were approaching these essays, I thought that it was needed because I, myself, needs more practice on essay writing. Reviewing on the citations was a refreshment to my brain because I needed to go back and recollect what my English teacher last year has thought me. I sure had fun today especially taking our group picture.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It's very helpful to see well written essays because it sets an example as to write properly. The essays that we read today are so interesting and it motivates me to learn more on how to keep the readers interested the essay that i will write in the future. I am also one of those students who tend to have difficulties on citing and reviewing the proper ways to cite absolutely helps.
DeleteWalked into class and everyone was getting prepared to take an class photo. Soon, we will be able to see if our brains got any bigger at the end of the term. The citation discussion was something new to me, I guess I never really payed attention in high school. My brain was refreshed with how to write a descriptive essay. Lesson of the day, organization is key. Also, with the struggle to be an All American girl was extremely sad, it teaches a lesson to cherish what you have when you have it. That's all for me folks. Have a great day and stay motivated.
ReplyDelete-Shannon
It was also refresher to me on writing descriptive essays. I agree, "The Struggle to be an All-American Girl" was heartbreaking. It's important to appreciate what you have before its taken away.
DeleteMany of the things we discussed in class was definitely new to me. Hopefully in the next three months, I hope to become efficient in writing essays, understand how to organize our thoughts and learn how to express effectively on paper.
DeleteI thought that today’s class was exciting as we started off with taking a class picture for our class blog. It was thrilling when my classmates did an air instrument show for the class before we started to begin with some examples of Student Reading-Based Writing. We discussed on some guidelines on how to write a descriptive essay. Descriptive essays motivates us the skill to write an experience for readers to have a realistic image in their minds.
ReplyDeleteI agree that descriptive essays depicts the readers to experience realistic image as well as helping us to connect with the story emotionally. It WAS awesome watching our classmates having fun as they performed, hopefully we see more of that the next 3 months.
DeleteWhat a great way to start the class! I found the class environment comforting as we took a group photo for our blog spot. I learned that “documenting sources for papers on written material is systematic.” (Brandon & Brandon 2011, p.20). By citing your sources I learned that we are giving credit to its originator, otherwise it is considered plagiarism and it is not tolerated in our EN100-13 class. Watching my classmates play air instruments to “Falling” by Iration was another great way to ease my way throughout the remainder of the class. After reading “The Struggle to be an All-American Girl,” I came to conclusion that I can relate to the author. My grandmother had forced me to go to Chinese School when I was a child, which led me to dislike the Chinese language and I did not understand the importance and privilege it was to know Chinese in this economy. Now that I am an adult, I realize how hard it is to get a job without having a degree or language skills. I wished I stayed in Chinese School.
ReplyDeleteThe group photo was a great way to start off class. I also thought that the "air band" was also great!
DeleteI agree, I did find it comforting as we took a group picture before class started. Documenting sources can help show respect for the author’s ideas. It is important to document your sources because if you don't, you can end up in serious consequences for plagiarizing.
