  1. Today we took a class picture, which was interesting and different. The review of a descriptive essay well understood and thoroughly discussed. There are many topics we could choose from, which makes it a lot easier.

    8. Although I was late to class, I'm glad we got to take another one. It was a great way to start the class. It was nice to see the class using the computer lab because its a different setting. Good luck to you on your future endeavours.

  2. I am feeling calm about today’s activities. Trying to find a good topic for the descriptive essay is going to be a hassle because I feel that there are so many topics to write about. I feel much better establishing more effective ways of writing a better essay by learning how to cite works properly. I love to read people’s story of acceptance of who they are and the conflicts that they go through in order to find a cultural identity. I also just want to point out that I love blogging, and I can’t wait to keep doing so.

    1. One topic you can use for your essay could be about culture or about how people should have a better understanding of themselves.

    2. I agree, blogging is fun! My advice is to go with a topic you are passionate about so it can appeal to your audience.

    3. Its awesome that you love blogging, isn't it great that we could blog in this class for the rest of the semester.

    4. Don't worry about not having a topic to write about just yet, that's usually how geniuses work! >:D They may not know what to accomplish now, but when their mind is finally ready to go - it becomes a masterpiece or great experiment!

    5. I agree with Ixora! :) You should also think about a topic that interests you, something that you feel confident about. Hopefully, you'll find one soon. As the semester goes by, I hope that I'll enjoy blogging as much as you do. xD

    6. I am glad that I won’t be the only one feeling that way about writing a descriptive essay. There are tons of topics to consider. I never knew that someone would be passionate about blogging considering that video sharing has been a trend. That’s great. Keep it up!

    7. Finding a topic to write my descriptive essay will be a hassle as well, you're not alone. Good luck to you on your quest to finding the perfect topic. The struggle is real.

  3. In today’s activities, the class discussed about various things dealing with essays and citation. During the reading robin, I have learned that it is important to cite the work whether it would be a quote or information from an author. The segment about the air guitar would have been really interesting if someone was able to demonstrate it. I find the blog entry about descriptive essay helpful for guidelines to reach the standards in writing the essay. I do not have an idea of what I want to talk about in my descriptive essay. Would anyone care to give me any suggestions?

    1. Hey! I liked all those things too! I wish you weren't so modest and had showed your air guitar skills to the class. What a shame. I can help you choose some topics if you want and then maybe we could work on it together! What do you say? =) Here's a suggestion: Learning a musical instrument.....AIR GUITAR!!!!

    2. I agree. It is very important to cite any work of another author. For your descriptive essay, you should write about all your accomplishments you have experienced in high school. Good luck!

      Delete
    3. I agree with you on the terms of the air guitar. It would have change our moral for the better. It is easier to stay focus if you can break the monotony of the typical classroom setting.

      Delete
    4. I thought someone would go up and show off their air guitar skills, it would have been entertaining. The discussion about the descriptive essay was very informative and easy to understand.

      Delete
    5. If only you showcased your air guitar skills it would've been very entertaining. And as for the topic of your descriptive essay, why not talk about our high school experiences with a certain organization?

      Delete
    6. I believe that you should have demonstrated your talents with the air guitar. I also agree with the importance of citation. As for a topic suggestion, maybe describe your feelings and things that you do at the gym.

      Delete
    7. I've also learned alot from the group reading about citations, paragraph formats, annotations and so much more. Can't wait to apply it when we start writing papers.

  4. I really enjoyed today’s class! The little exerts and essays that we reviewed in class were entertaining because they not only educated me with English and writing but also on a deeper level especially in regards to the importance of culture. Reviewing how to cite sources was a good refresher that will help me in our next assignment, our descriptive essay. I found the information on how to write a descriptive essay very constructive and useful for our task at hand. Although there are a wide range of topics to choose from one stood out to me the most, “A sad day in life.” I cannot wait to get started on my essay and hopefully with what I learned today it can be an effective one that my audience will find intriguing.

    3. It sounds like you have a mind set on what to talk about. If you need help for the peer review, I would love to give you feedback :) It was great sitting next to you today

  5. Today we learned the proper ways to cite our sources. It is necessary to give citations to avoid plagiarism and it also demonstrates professionalism. We discussed about descriptive essays and the unique ways to help better organize and prepare ourselves to present a better paper. It was an outstanding day that was shared with fellow colleagues.

    2. One thing to note about descriptive essays is that it should make the reader feel like they are experiencing what you did. Today was a good day and I am looking forward to the rest of the semester.

    3. It is great that we’re learning these lessons in class. I think that towards the end of the semester, we will be better writers than we were when we started.

  6. Today, we discussed how to use and site citations. Going over such skill was very informative due to the fact that it has been a while since I took an English class. I am glad that we covered citations most especially with the four essays that are coming up. Reading some essays was very helpful on practicing citations. We also went over narrative essays which will be our first type of essay that we will cover. We went over what show be on the essay and different topics we can choose from. Last, we briefly went over the 3 other essays that we will cover in the near future of the semester: narrative, expository, and argumentative. All in all, today’s call was very informative.

    1. If you are available, I would like to work with you on trying to write a descriptive essay. It has been a while since I took an English class as well so maybe we can work through this struggle together :)

    2. I agree with you, Rheanna. My last english teacher didn't teach me much on how to structure and format an essay, nor did she teach me how to make proper citations. Although I had learned that in junior year, I don't remember the exact way to cite a source. So, today's lesson was definitely informative.

      Delete
    3. Going over citations was great! At first, when I tried doing citations, I had to look back and forth because it has been a while since I learned how to do citations properly. I haven’t been used to the format actually, but it is feels satisfying knowing that we’ll learn more about them. So now, we can use them in our upcoming essays. :)

  7. I thought that today was a good day, I loved listening to people read and trying to understand what they’re saying. The descriptive writing essay would probably be really easy, but don’t quote me on that. The fact that you only have to describe things that you’ve experienced makes it easy relating to the fact that if you experienced it you can’t get it wrong. I’m gonna have so much fun explaining my house, when my neighbors bring all their family members from around the island to crowd my street and play loud music all night.

    1. Experience is a great way to write an essay because you "lived the moment" of that time and being in that moment is all that matters because it does give you something to write about, and it does give you a way of saying, "I was there."

    2. Glad to know that you enjoy listening to other people read. True, experiences do make things easier to describe especially on essays. Your choice of topic seems pretty interesting. Good luck!

    5. The descriptive essay does seem easy. Do not let the ease of write one get the best of you. This is a college course so more than a typical high school essay would not suffice.

    6. Reading as a group made the readings more fun and exciting to do, while the instructor would break it down if something looked confusing to understand. Learned alot and actually had a great time in class.

  8. Today we learned how to properly cite our sources when writing a paper we also went over how to identify cited information. Learning how to cite is important to avoid plagiarism and give credit to the person who came up with that idea/sentence. We discussed how our descriptive essay should be written and the different topics we can write about. Descriptive essays should allow the reader to feel like they were there with you during that moment.

    2. I agree that a descriptive essay should make the reader feel as if that person is actually there. The little details about materials and settings should give a connection between the reader and your essay. Good luck writing your essay :)

      Delete
    3. I definitely agree with you, Shane. An effective descriptive essay should make the reader visualize the image the author is trying to create, sense the emotion that is being evoked and, like you said, feel as if the reader and author are connected.

    4. I surely agree with you, in fact we have similar beliefs. Descriptive essays SHOULD allow the reader to feel like they were there during that moment. :)

  9. Today’s class session was quite interesting. The lesson about citation was a review for me because I was taught a similar material during my junior year in high school. The lesson was a bit more detailed because the lesson gave better descriptions on what to input in the format. As for the descriptive essay, I thought it was beneficial because I was previously taught how to compose a descriptive essay, but only for a brief time that I barely understood how to accurately write a descriptive essay. Now, I have a tangible text to refer to rather than remembering the lecture of my teacher. I can also use that knowledge to properly compose an essay and its citation. Overall, the lesson today was both interesting and beneficial for me.

  10. Today in class we did class readings on Citations, Works Cited, “Listening to the Air” Guitar, “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl”, and EN100’s four major essays to come. I’m glad we read what we did because citing information was something I’d struggle with, but now I know the basics and it’s now something I’m more comfortable doing (correctly). Also, another appreciated reading was “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl.” The story spoke to me because it really made me appreciate my roots because I can proudly say they run deep and remain grounded. Unlike the author, my culture and values will always remain the same regardless of the ever-changing years to come. Lastly, reviewing our essays to come gave me a great heads up of what to expect and how it’s expected to be done.
Good class – glad to be here! :D

  11. During the lecture in class we discussed multiple of topics. First we reviewed how to proper cite our essay. I am glad that we reviewed this topic in order to keep us from accidentally plagiarizing. Jackie Malone’s essays “Sexiest Men as Victims” keep me interested during this portion of the lecture. I was able to grasp the basic concept of proper citation, followed by the works cited page. The works cited portion was the hardest to understand. The rest of the lecture was easy to understand.

    1. Were you interested because you're a sexist man? Haha, just kidding!
If you need help with understanding the works cited portion, ask Dave because he has good memory (look at his post, he outlined everything we did in class today, haha).

    2. I'm glad that "Sexist Men as Victims" also caught your attention. It was an interesting example on how to incorporate ideas and document them. It also had two examples on how to cite the author and the page number by putting it in parenthesis, so it was easy to understand. I also get what you mean on the works cited portion. I had to do that for a research paper in high school, and I thought it was confusing. It isn’t as hard as it seems, I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it when we start to learn more about the MLA format. :)

  12. Today’s activities were very informative. For text-based writing, citations and works cited are very important to prevent plagiarism. If you were to borrow an idea, make sure to give credit to the originator. Remember when trying to identify citations, not all are in quotation. Essays that showcased documentation were very helpful examples.
Descriptive essays should use clear, vivid, and concise language to appeal to the reader. Also, using your senses is a great way for your reader to capture the moment in which you were describing. Lastly, organization is important to having a clear and effective essay.

  13. Today in my EN100 class, I learned the different kinds of support for text-based writings. Learning that I am likely to use three methods in developing my ideas, using explanations, references, and quotations. In addition, aside from learning how to cite my work, I’ve come across on how to write a descriptive essay and learned many other things about it. I’m not a fan of blogging but since it’s for a class, I have no choice. 15. During the class time, we read one of the essays named “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl” by Elizabeth Wong. I would like to say that the experience that Elizabeth Wong has faced, is kind of awkward for her to start a new cultural even though she is a Chinese. Based on my own experience, I knew that it is really tough to learn and get along with a new cultural, language, and environment. It seems like everything needs to start from the beginning and it takes very long time to go. However, Elizabeth is a Chinese, I think she needs to enrich and accept herself. She should suppose to learn a bit Chinese language and the cultural in order to be as a multicultural person.

Especially the descriptive essays because during the last semester of school, our main focus was on the different types of essays. I’m glad we went over that and also the citations too, because I didn’t have a clear understanding of the citations lesson. I found it hard to learn before but now, I find it pretty easy. We discussed the importance of citation and how it helps with plagiarism. I feel that it was useful to go over citations because not everyone uses or writes citations correctly. 19. I enjoyed today’s activities. I got into a bad car accident the other day in Mangilao. I’m still very sore but it feels exceptionally good to have the courage and strength to come into this vibrant class. Today's lecture was very informative. I’m someone who needs to continuously review something before actually going through with it, therefore the review on the descriptive essay was tremendously helpful.
While reading “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl,” I started to reflect on my life and how it was to constantly move due to my step father being in the military. It is very challenging to embrace your culture when you are surrounded by an all American society, especially at a young age because all you want to do is fit in. So, I definitely understand her perception on it.

  20. Today was the first day that we had class in the computer lab and it was something new. This is also the first time that I’ve had to blog online, so I’m new to this whole social media. It was a bit nerve racking posting up my first blog as well, but as I read other people's comments, everyone is responding to each other in a positive way. :) To be honest, I am not a read aloud kind of learner. I learn better when I read to myself. So, I am glad that we stopped after a paragraph or an important topic and discussed it. It made it much easier to comprehend. I agree with Daniel, the “Sexist Men as Victims” kept me interested as well. It caught my attention at the beginning of today’s lesson. It was also a good example to show how to illustrate and incorporate ideas and document them. I was glad that I was able to recall some of the things we learned in class, like using the MLA format when citing your sources. I did this in high school and used index cards. It was a good way to practice for the real essay. Towards the ending of the class, we discussed descriptive essays. I have done a descriptive essay in high school, so I’m glad that this lesson refreshed my memory. Hopefully, I will find a topic that I am confident with writing about real soon.
